Grade 1-6?This picture-book biography recounts the boyhood of a real Lakota Sioux named Slow, who grew up in the 1830s. Today's children of any background can empathize with his efforts to outgrow his childhood name and take his place as an adult among his people. The illustrations, oils that are rich and somber, convey details of traditional Lakota life, from the warm, close interiors of the family home to a pre-dawn assembly of warriors about to raid their Crow neighbors. The text creates an equally subtle portrayal of Plains Indian life. Many stereotypes of Native American culture are gently corrected, as when the author acknowledges that "women are the heart of the nation." The traditional Lakota explanation for the advent of horses is given alongside mention of their historical introduction by European explorers. Dialogue in the Native language helps to convey the richness of the culture. By the time Slow earns his new name, young readers will feel they know a real person?the man who was to become Sitting Bull, one of the great Sioux warriors and a hero at the Battle of Little Bighorn. To everyone's surprise, he races ahead of the war party to attack the Crows, who quickly flee. Proudly, Slow's father renames him Sitting Bull. In brilliant counterpoint to the story's emotional timelessness is Baviera's vision of the Lakotas as spiritually and culturally distant from us. His dark acrylics punctuated by the unexpected pastels of diminished sunlight--purple snow, turquoise smoke, orange skies--is at once mythic and melancholy in its portrayal of a vanished culture. received an MS from the University of Dayton. She has taken postgraduate studies at Ohio State, West Virginia University, Kent State, and Ohio University. She was employed as a dental assistant/hygienist in oral surgery, orthodontics, and general practices before she became a dental assisting instructor and Diversified Cooperative Health Occupations coordinator at Belmont Career Center in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Along with teaching duties she chartered the National Honor Society participation of the vocational school and was advisor for the VICA opening and closing ceremony team to National competition representing the state of Ohio. Mrs. Dofka has retired from active teaching but maintains life membership in the Iota Lambda Sigma, professional vocational teaching fraternity, DANB dental assisting certification, and maintains retired status as dental hygienist in West Virginia. She is currently serving in consultation practice and advisory board capacity as well as volunteer activities.

Book is great for beginners, except for the first chapters. The book is overwhelming at first and takes reviewing at later points of the book to understand why programmers need to do some things in Java. Otherwise it's a great book for beginners.

Book's physical quality is great as well.

Good but...

For many people and especially for most American fans Brian Bolland is THE Judge Dredd artist. This hefty book collects all his work in one very nice volume and should be appreciated by any fans of Bolland or Dredd.

However, if you're looking for an introduction to Judge Dredd and are unfamiliar with the stories in this book you should NOT buy it. As other reviewers have pointed out there were some crucial story arcs that Bolland only pencilled certain chapters of. Since this book collects work by Bolland and only Bolland the result is some maddenly incomplete stories. Anyone coming in fresh who tries reading this cover to cover is going to be very, very confused. Such newcomers would be much better off finding inexpensive back issues of the Judge Dredd comics published by Eagle back in the early 80's (the entire series of which could probably be bought for just a little more than the price of this book).

Highly Recommended for Bolland ART Fans

If you are a fan of Brian Bolland's artwork than this is a must-have collection. This is one of his pre-DC Comics efforts and it's nice to see his detailed artwork from page to page. The production of the book is excellent with a sturdy hard cover, solid binding, and sharp reproductions. I personally find Judge Dredd stories to be OK, not great, not bad, and since this is a compilation of Briand Bolland artwork you will not always get complete story arcs. But that's fine with me since I bought this to look at Bolland's artwork. Another plus is that you get the artwork in clear black and white without coloring. This shows off Bolland's pencil and ink work much better imo. For Brian Bolland ART fans this is five stars and highly recommended.

Beautiful collection of Dredd comics by a great artist.

Brian Bolland is definitely a special artist and worthy of an over-sized, pricey book such as this. Buyers should be aware that this collection is definitely about the art and not the stories. Every page is art by Brian Bolland so in some cases you only get partial stories that originally appeared in 2000 A.D. I especially enjoyed the covers and pinups section at the back.

My specific view of the authors view of near miss

The preface of this book is understood to provide an endorsement of H.W. Heinrich’s safety theories of some 80 years ago. This is a difficult endorsement to understand in 2015 with the amount of data that has been collected by the United States government and published. Such currently published data does not appear to support Heinrich’s theory of a ratio between mishaps and near-miss. In Professional Safety, October 2011, Fred Manuele published a review of Heinrich’s theory and the data titled "Reviewing Heinrich Dislodging Two Myths From the Practice of Safety." Fred Manuele concludes that knowledge has evolved about how accidents occur and their causal factors, the emphasis is now properly placed on improving the work system, rather than on worker behavior. The author of this book makes no attempt answer such challenges to Heinrich but instead appears to embrace the theories as fact and leverages them to support the book.

The work also appears to use the concept of “Luck” but this is not the most precise term. The idea that good or bad fortune controls ones fate is a bit difficult to embrace. It would have been perhaps more precise to have described the near miss as an outcome with a probability. The work appear to also build upon the idea that root cause actual exists. While there is a method of root cause analysis, it is unclear if anyone has ever completed one. That is, when one thinks about the term “root cause” it can be somewhat difficult to definitively prove that singular cause.

Near miss is not so refined an area of research or work that only one view or model exists. There was small consideration for the merits of other views. For example the National Academies Press, in 2004 provided the "Accident Precursor Analysis and Management: Reducing Technology Risk Through Diligence" which is an interesting discussion of the near miss topic in general and it is still understood to be a free resource.

However, this author does provide a disciplined approach to the topic of near miss regardless of our areas of disagreement and as well a reasonable introduction to the topic of near-miss.
