Another triumph?

This is yet another of Aaron Demski-Bowden's superb books. I received the Emperor's Gift on Monday evening and had finished it by the end of the next day before starting another of ADB's books. This time, the focus is on the Grey Knights, the most secretive of all Space Marine Chapters to the extent that all humans that learn about their existence must be purged. As Warhammer 40k or readers of Ben Counter's Grey Knights Omnibus will know already, the Grey Knights Chapter - the Emperor's Gift - are Psyker Space Marines specialized in fighting the Daemons of Chaos across the Empire. They mostly operate in small units at the call of Imperial Inquisitors. This book is centered on one Hyperion, a young Grey Knight who joins Castan Squad and the events take place before, during and after the first war for Armageddon. There are numerous reasons for loving this story, which is told in the first person by Hyperion himself.

One is that it presents the Grey Knights in a different light than what Ben Counter has done a while ago. Gone are the super-hero�c Grey Knights who make "ordinary" Space Marines seem like children. Instead, you tend to get another Chapter of Space Marines, but a secretive one with specialized skills, and these Space Marines have their weaknesses, just like any of the others. As ADB tends to favor, his Space Marines are first and foremost human, and then super-warriors. They are not invincible, far from it, and are no stronger than other Space Marines, especially not the fierce Space Wolves of Fenris.

Another is that the book brings in the Wolves and opposes them to the Inquisition and the Grey Knights. This is particularly interesting because it allows it to get ADB's take on the Wolves, which, while not original, emphasizes their fierce independence and their sense of honor, as opposed to what they see as the traitorous Inquisitors. A related point is that opposing the Wolwes to the Grey Knights allows to contrast the two organizations, although both are traditionnally viewed, in different ways, as the Emperor's executionners. This is where ABD seems to have introduced a bit of a novelty when compared to other novels where the Wolves appear: they care for "ordinary" humans in a way that the Wolves of Leman Russ do not in previous novels.

Anyway, introducing the Wolves and giving them such an important role is likely to draw in many readers for whom the Wolves have a special attraction: they have always been among the most favoured Space Marines Legions for many readers. A related point and another original streak is to oppose two sets of heroes - the Grey Knights and the Wolves - and the "goodies" are somewhat difficult to determine when the two get to fight each other, just lik,e in any civil war.

In a similar vein, ABD paints Hyperion, and the Grey Knights more generally, with all their qualities, but also all their flaws, insisting on their contradictions, emotions and limitations as has become his trademark. In a way, this book can be seen as the "initiation" of the young and largely untested Hyperion through trials, errors and sacrifices in what can only be a long, painful and bitter process.

Apart from that, his battle scenes as a good as usual, with this feeling that every fight is a desperate struggle and every "victory", if they can be called that, is a costly achievement and comes with grievous losses. There are no shining triumphs in this book.

Finally, the most striking feature of this book is, once again, ADB's originality and the way he stands apart from what we have come to expect from most other Black Library authors. This is not to say that he is necessarily "better" than the others but rather that he has a different take which comes out as a breath of fresh air as moves away from the paths that others have already trod. In a way, this book, like others, make him into some kind of "First Heretic" among Warhammer 40K authors. This originality makes the book worth reading in itself, regardless of whether you agree with ABD's take or not.

I loved it and I hope many other readers will love it as least as much.

Intense Action with Grey Knights, Space Wolves and Angron

I've read all of the books based on the Grey Knights, and The Emperor's Gift is my favorite by far. There's plenty of daemon-killing action as you would expect, but best of all are the parts that deal with the First War for Armaggedon - not the first Ork invasion of this world but the daemonic invasion of the world that the Inquisition has worked hard to keep secret. In the 40K universe, there've been many whispered references to the First War but very few stories written about it. I was disappointed that more of the story wasn't devoted to Armaggedon but then again, the Ordo Malleus was only involved with the last stages of the First War. Also, you get to see the Grey Knights come into conflict with the Space Wolves, and Logan Grimnar in action. Highly recommended if you're a Grey Knights fan.

A must read

I bought this book, two copies, for myself and a friend who is an Inquisition fan, and obviously Grey Knights.
Both of us loved the book for two different aspects. Me as a fluff fan and in depths reader of background material, loved the book because it is about a pivotal story arch for the Grey Knights and the Grey Knight history. As well as other aspects that I do not wish to reveal, due to it spoiling the storyline.
My friend who is a Grey Knights player loved the actions that were taken and commands the Grey Knights were forced to do.

Aaron Dembski-Bowden did a perfect illustration as to what it takes to be a Grey Knight and what dangers they are uniquely designed and trained for. This and Deathwatch by Steve Parker are two must reads of 2013 for any Inquisition fans.

He was the author of more than forty books on law and legal philosophy. Active as a teacher in Europe and the United States, he was Dean of the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna and taught at the universities of Cologne and Prague, the Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Harvard, Wellesley, the University of California at Berkeley, and the Naval War College.

A excellent work about international law

International law has a great lack of philosophical like-works about his institutions, and Kelsen book offers such a view.

Not that the reader will find something astonish new, if he already readed his General Theory of Stats and Law, some parts will look a deja vu.

If u can spend the money for buy this work, i would recommend it, since it is every day more difficult to get great autors in they home language (Even Kelsen being austrian, this work was written by him in english).

And under our political system, it is the right of each individual to have a voice in the making of social policies as, indeed, he has a vote in the determination of political affairs. If this be true, education is primarily a public business, and only secondarily a specialized vocation. The layman, then, will always have his right to some utterance on the operation of the public schools.

Great ideas in a stagnant text.

First off, that's a 3.5, not a 3, but whatever. Perhaps I am just not one for reading philosophy, or as I like to think, many philosophers simply do not understand how to write in a clear fasion. At the bottom of it, Dewey's ideas for ethics in education are as vital now as they were when he wrote it back 1909, but perhaps if he could have made his points in some way more coherent (at a little over 50 pages, this still feels bloated, I imagine it could be clearly stated in about 10 pages), the entire US educational system would have been where it is now by the 20's--and that truly would have been something revolutionary. Dewey goes so far as essentially voicing his own primitive theory of constructivism, along with revolutionary concepts such as 'those who do the doing do the learning'--namely that teaching should be more student oriented and should first and foremost engage the student. There even seems to be a bit of the 'content versus process' debate here, and yet I think there must be more modern writers who have stated this with greater clarity. For people who enjoy reading terse philosophical monologues (and this certainly is still quite readable--I've seen much worse), then certainly pick up this book both for its historical value and a relatively interesting exploration of the ethics in teaching. If your a busy grad student like me though, this may not seem like it is worth the frustration--especially when you can open up almost any teaching journal and see the same ideas. Sure, they didn't say if first, but I don't fall asleep reading it.

About the Author

Martha Crenshaw is a Senior Fellow at the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) and the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, and Professor of Political Science, by courtesy, at Stanford University. She is also Professor of Government Emerita at Wesleyan University. She is a lead investigator with the National�Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START) at the University of Maryland.

Why They Do It

Martha Crenshaw is not someone who became a terrorism expert in the wake of 9/11/01 or even the earlier World Trade Center attack in 1993. Rather, the author entered the field with an interest in 19th century Russian revolutionaries. By 1967 she was focusing on the Algerian FLN. Startling events bring international attention to terrorism and inevitably create instant commentators based on 15 minutes background scanning wire reports. That is not Crenshaw.

Crenshaw points out that 1960's terrorism had specific demands, whereas Al Qaeda uses mass casualties without specific demands. Its threat is existential, changing life in an orderly democratic society into a fearful, risky experience, and, in the process, causing massive economic dislocation into protective strategies. Although my favorite terrorists or violent separatists, if you prefer, the Albanian Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) are barely mentioned by Crenshaw, they are a superb example of achieving specific goals by tying them to specific terror tactics. The author does note that, "Clinton Administration special envoy Robert Gelbard publicly called the Kosovo Liberation Army a terrorist group" in 1998, but does not include their decade of activities in her analysis of more than 70 terrorist organizations beginning in 1963. Terrorist groups in the Balkans, including 17 November in Greece, are excluded from Crenshaw's authoritative global study of historical terrorism.

In late July 2011, one naturally wonders how well this book explains the Norwegian terrorist, Anders Behring Breivik? Crenshaw is very helpful in providing the intellectual framework for considering any terrorist. He was acting in the context of ..."a peaceful and orderly setting where violence is the exception rather than the rule." Breivik created mass casualties in a brief time period on a scale comparable to 9/11 in the U.S. (as a percentage of the small population of Norway) that was equally unimaginable to that society. But, in contrast to 9/11, seemingly, he did it alone. Over more than a year, Breivik carefully planned and prepared his terrorist attack in exacting detail. He was responding violently to state policies he opposed, a causal aspect dealt with at length in Crenshaw. Unlike Al Qaeda's actors but like the KLA, Breivik was not suicidal.

"Social myths, traditions, and habits permit the development of terrorism as an established political custom" -an excellent explanation of the KLA but not of Breivik's Norwegian environment. However, Crenshaw emphasizes the role of a permissive society in accommodating terrorism such as Breivik's: "...terrorism does not occur in efficient and ruthless dictatorships..." Next, we might ask whether Breivik achieved his goals as the KLA did? The immediate assessment is that like the Basques, Bretons, and most of the groups studied by Crenshaw, he utterly failed, and in fact may have set back the political goals he espoused. He has undercut the nonviolent parties in Norway that oppose multiculturalism. They have quickly disavowed Breivik and separated themselves from his goals. Norway's Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg gave an unprecedented address at the Central Jamaat Mosque and held meetings with Muslim leaders aimed at intensifying the multicultural importance and unity in Norway.

In contrast, the KLA acquired NATO as its air force, which launched an intense79 day bombing campaign against Serbs. In the end the Serbian population was ethnically cleansed from most of Kosovo and dozens of countries (although not the UN Security Council) ultimately recognized the breakaway province of Serbia as an independent nation.

Crenshaw's concluding advice is as sobering as it is unwelcome. "The government that adopts a conciliatory policy may inadvertently signal that terrorism works. Thus the alternative to terrorism is not always nonviolence, and the choice of a nonviolent strategy is not always reciprocated by one's opponent."
