Must read for MBA applicants

The author has done an exceptional job of offering concise insider information for anyone trying to apply for MBA programs. A particular power of this book is the anecdotes. Most people can find an anecdote that relates closely to their situation (assuming they're self-aware -- some of the anecdotes are not flattering), and then they'll be able to extract (or extrapolate) relevant advice. Another power of of the book is the very practical advice contained throughout; e.g., don't worry about 2 points on the GMAT, spend your time networking instead. Finally, the book contains "do and don't" list. Pay attention to them. These list were made by a thoughtful author who has been in the admissions office of various top MBA programs.

In short, I'd recommend that anyone considering applying for MBA programs read this book. It's a small cost compared to the cost of the applications, and it'll make you more competitive, save you time, and ensure that you're thinking about the MBA correctly.

As side note, I am a faculty member in Engineering, and although the book is focused on MBA programs, it can also be useful for other students applying for graduate degrees. The initialisms will change (e.g., GRE vs. GMAT), much of the advice remains relevant (e.g., "essays are an important component of the admissions process because they highlight applicants' ability to think and write clearly.").

Best advice received from a book

This was a well written book for anyone involved in the MBA process (prospective MBA students, current MBA students, and of course, alumni). The anecdotes helped hasten the book's consumption pace - with many laughs and *gasp* moments in between the relevant information.

As a current MBA student, I found the material relevant especially learning how to leverage my Business school resources to help launch myself into post-MBA life. Brian's book is helping me make the most of my MBA experience and lessening some regrets I had about not attending a different MBA program at the institution where I earned my Bachelor's degree from.

I recommend this to anyone seeking advice on Business School for an MBA. I find it is a comprehensive guide for making the most of any school. That is the best advice I could ever have received from a book.

Clear and useful look at MBA admissions and so much more

This is a very clear, well-written book on the ins and outs of MBA admissions. It's clear the author has inside experience on the process and shares a lot of common sense here. For example: don't obsess and retake the GMAT 6 times to get a higher score if your first score falls within the acceptable range for your schools of choice. Instead, focus on the things that will really differentiate you in the eyes of the admissions committee; your personal essays, letters of recommendation, etc. Again, probably obvious but it's helpful to have an insider lay it out for you. If you are considering applying for an MBA you should probably get this book. Make the most of it!

I have written a detailed chapter-by-chapter review of this book on www DOT i-programmer DOT info, the first and last parts of this review are given here. For my review of all chapters, search i-programmer DOT info for STIRK together with the book's title.

This book from SolidQ aims to give you a deeper understanding of T-SQL functionality. With an emphasis throughout on performance, how does it fare?

This book is both an update to, and a combination of, three previous books (T-SQL Querying – published 2009, T-SQL Programming -2009, and T-SQL Using Window Functions - 2012). New material from SQL Server 2012 and 2014 is discussed, including: Window Functions, the new cardinality estimator, sequences, columnstore technology, and in-memory OLTP. It comes from SolidQ and is written by some of the most respected names in the world of SQ Server.

Aimed primarily at developers and administrators, it offers a detailed view of internal architecture and a comprehensive programming reference. It aims to provide a practical approach together with techniques to optimize code. This is not a book for the beginner, it assumes at least one year's solid experience of T-SQL programming, and tuning basics.

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 Logical query processing

This chapter opens with an observation about experts - they build their knowledge upon a solid understanding of the basics. So this chapter starts with a look at the basics, logical query processing i.e. the logical order the various parts of a T-SQL statement are executed. Each step is discussed in detail, these steps are:

1. FROM phase (include virtual table for each of the possible types of join)
2. WHERE phase (can’t use column aliases here – SELECT not yet applied)
3. GROUP BY phase (nulls considered equal here)
4. HAVING phase (filter applied to GROUP BY)
5. SELECT phase (2 steps: evaluate expressions then apply distinct clause)
6. ORDER BY phase
7. Apply the TOP or OFFSET-FETCH filter

The chapter continues with a look at further aspects of logical query processing, including table operators (join, apply, pivot, unpivot), windows functions (work with set of data per underlying row, use OVER clause) and UNION, EXCEPT, and INTERSECT operators.

This chapter provides instructive detail on the logical order that the various parts of a T-SQL statement are executed. Helpful examples are provided to illustrate the points made. The discussions are easy to read. Plenty of useful tips are provided along the way (e.g. a CASE expression with no ELSE clause has an implicit ELSE NULL). Useful links to other chapters in this book and to various websites are provided. All these points apply to the whole book.

Conclusion

This book aims to give you a deeper understanding of T-SQL features, with an emphasis throughout on performance. It is an amalgamation and update of 3 previous well-respected books.

All the topics are explained in a very readable and interesting manner. Throughout, there are helpful explanations, screenshots, practical code examples, inter-chapter references, and links to websites for further information. Where possible, references to performance improvements are included. Additionally, there are plenty of useful incidental side tips. Although primarily intended for SQL Server 2014 and 2012, much of the content is applicable to earlier (and probably later) versions too.

This book is not for the beginner. It teaches advanced SQL concepts and techniques, it should take your understanding of T-SQL from around 4 to around 8. It is an ideal follow-on from Ben-Gan’s “Microsoft SQL Server 2012 T-SQL Fundamentals”, which I recently reviewed.

The book does have omissions, and this is to be expected, otherwise it would run into several volumes. I would have liked to have seen a section on websites/newsletters that would improve your T-SQL understanding. I would have also liked to have seen some discussion of Big Data and its implications. Then there’s the perennial problem of book updates, it would be helpful to know what is new compared to previous editions of the book (this should be easier in the digital world). That said, in the broader context, these are really minor points.

If you want a more advanced understanding of T-SQL features, together with the latest performance techniques, written by some of the best SQL educators, I can highly recommend this excellent book.

The Must Have T-SQL querying book

This book is truly a reference book to have. If you're pretty serious about taking your T-SQL to advanced and expert level, this is the ultimate reference book to have. The very first chapter will be a great eye-opening if you never learned about T-SQL logical processing. This first chapter explains why you were getting certain error messages you can't even debug and with which google search can't help either. The next chapter and the subsequent 3 chapters really give you the power and the ability to think like a "pro" and SQL codes just pour from your mind to your fingers and to the keyboard. I just read the first five chapters and I was able to solve so many business problems that I couldn't solve before and about which I couldn't find help online with Google.
This book is packed with excellent expert knowledge to help you grow your skills and think and design solutions for solving business problems.

This book is easily among the finest on the subject.It covers everything a SQL Server developer needs to know to get the job done and get it done right the first time. It even delves into the SQLCLR which is given short shrift in many other volumes. I've given this book a five star rating. If I could have given it more, I surely would have. A Condo With Two Views is my first encounter with the writings of Al Daltrey. And oh my goodness, what a pleasure it was. So how did this book get its title? Let me explain!

This book revolves around two protagonists, Chloe and Jack Gibbs. They have just married and have moved into their new home. A condo that has two spectacular views. The living room faces north with a view of the water and Alcatraz. The view that faces south was a busy area of shops and restaurants. I also had the feeling that the title includes the layout of this book which gives you two views. Jack’s POV and Chloe’s POV. I absolutely loved the idea of hearing both points of view as I’ve not read many that have done this. It certainly made for an interesting read.

Jack and Chloe have a Dom / Sub relationship and as a married couple, slipped in and out of their roles quite easily. A couple that genuinely loved each other and would do anything for each other. At the sound of Jack’s Dom voice Chloe would automatically go into sub mode. Head down, yes master. It was like he had flipped a switch that was so easily done. The trust she places in him has no boundaries or limits. Everything that was asked of her, she would do. Pleasing her husband is what she lived for. As a Dom, he seemed to set her quite a few challenges. These challenges excited them both. Each chapter of this book gave you a completely new scenario to follow. And a new challenge was always set.

With having both point of views, I was able to delve into the depths of Chloe's mind and literally see and hear how she would go about the challenges set by her Dom. Her determination to succeed was second to none. If she was at all unable to fulfil the challenges set before her, Chloe would not be happy. And not succeeding was not an option. The challenges normally consisted of her serving others in a sexual manner. Their sexual relationship was loving as a married couple. As a Master and his pet, the pain he inflicted on her was quite an eye-opener. I began to wonder just how much pain Chloe could endure, but a true submissive doesn't appreciate softness in her dominant. And the pain was a complete turn on for Chloe. The use of a flogger, a riding crop and a cane held me in awe. What a trooper Chloe was. The pain must have been excruciating. She loved it!

For this couple, pain brings pleasure, pleasure brings pain. All I say is thank god for subspace! A spacey serene feeling which is less bothered by pain. Yes, I did some research on this subject! One of the last challenges set by Jack was a step too far for Chloe. As the perfect submissive, she was to serve a business associate of Jack’s that she disliked. For her master, she would do this. After the deed was done, Chloe found out that the reason she was to serve Jack’s associate was because Jack had lost a card game and Chloe was the prize. She was heartbroken and so was I. I felt for her. This was a man she loved and served and as her Dom, it was his job to care for her... In her eyes and my eyes he had failed her!

How the story ends I will leave to you the reader to find out. I can't give it all away. Whilst reading this book, my mind was full of questions. Would I enter into a contract with a Dom. Would I be able to be a sub? Would I be able to do everything that was asked of me like Chloe? I mean, she did everything! My answer...

Doms challenge their subs. Is it their way of seeing how far they can push them? How far they would go? It seems to me all the way. I have no qualms with the BDSM lifestyle. Whatever makes you happy. Chloe and Jack were very much in love and happy.
Al Daltrey. I bow to you sir. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed your book. You're writing is impeccable. Grammar was perfect and the words just flowed fluently throughout. The safe word you used for Chloe did make me smile and giggle, ha ha. I feel Mrs D's input was invaluable. Thank you Mrs D! More importantly, thank you Al for writing this book. The pleasure this time was all mine.

Two Views=Double the Fun!

After reading Al Daltrey's first book Testing The Submissive I said, that book needed to come with a warning. The warning being, it will change your mind how you think about the BDSM world. Discovering Al's writing has been nothing short of a "wake up call' for all of us erotica readers. DIFFERENT from anything you've read before. So as I started reading A Condo With Two Views I thought I was mentally prepared for another Al Daltrey book. Well once again I have been thrown for a loop. This book takes the reader into a completely different direction. Testing The Submissive was the epitome of reading about the BDSM world. A Condo With Two Views takes us through what it would realistically be like sharing a Dom/Sub life as a married couple. Al does a great job taking the reader through this journey with his exceptional writing skills, painting a picture for us to see into the day in and day out life of this couple. It's funny, actually hilarious at times, a sweet love story and a really great read. Oh, don't get me wrong it still has the hard limits and pushes the envelope on Dom/Sub life. But if your looking to read a realistic POV about the life of a married Dom/Sub couple this is it. Just remember, Al doesn't sugar coat anything.

The two POV style is a refreshing and very unique way to tell Jack and Chloe's story. But for me, I loved Chloe's POV the best. Jack is Jack. He loves Chloe with all his heart but he is a true Dom and when he is in Dom mode, look out. He pushes Chloe, pushes her to where you question, how does she do these things? She does them because she loves him as her husband first and foremost but also loves and craves him as her Dom. But don't think for one minute that Chloe is not a strong woman with her own mind and a truly equal kinky side just like Jack.

Can the two worlds really exist and work together? Will Jack be able to protect Chloe and remember she is his wife and not just his submissive. Or will he forget the most important role in his life and mess everything up. I would never spoil that for you the reader, so you will need to one click this one to find out.

I will promise you this story will have you thinking and questioning all the thoughts that will fill your mind wondering, do I really want and could I handle a Dom/Sub relationship? Once again Al Daltrey takes us on a wonderful ride with A Condo With Two Views. A ride you don't want to miss!

Sometimes you need a book that isn’t full of the classic battle between good and evil. There are no nefarious bad guys. No knights in shining armor. No insane drama that wrenches emotions from you with or without your permission. Sometimes you need a book that gives you an inside view on incredible people, just living their lives, figuring it out as they go. Sometimes you want to peep through the keyhole into someone else’s life and just see how they live for a while.

A Condo with Two Views is exactly that opportunity to peek into someone else’s life and be the proverbial fly on the wall as they go about their daily life. With one little unexpected surprise – Jack and Chloe Gibb are a BDSM couple living completely normal, every day lives most of the time. But this story gives readers an inside view into what that really looks like - what does a newly married couple who participate in some of the more kinky aspects of the BDSM lifestyle do everyday?

Jack Gibb is a successful businessman. He works hard and he loves his wife all the way to his bones. He is also her Master and occasionally lends her out to fulfill sexual tasks as he sees fit. He is strong, kind, tender and unyielding in his expectations. He is also human and we get to see how that humanity serves as both the strongest and weakest pieces of his Dominance.

Chloe Gibb is a strong, independent, smart and witty woman. She too works hard and loves her husband down to her bones. She is also a submissive and an eager one at that. She places herself completely in the hands of her Master and the level of trust she displays is absolutely gorgeous to watch. Her incredible inner strength is also amazing to witness.

These two characters are a match made in heaven. They compliment each other beautifully in so many ways. The way that Jack takes Chloe’s submission and channels it into tasks that please them both is both ingenious and very fun to read. The genuine love between them serves to deepen not only the meaning behind every task and interaction, but also the reader’s investment in the characters and story.

A Condo With Two Views is not only an honest love story between two people living their lives, but it’s also a truly authentic view into the BDSM lifestyle. When there are so many books written these days that incorporate elements of the lifestyle into their storylines, it’s absolutely refreshing to read one that gives such an authentic and loving portrayal of its possibilities.

This book is well written and chock full of truly interesting characters doing fun, sexy, hot as hell things with each other. Daltrey has written a book that is not only fun to read, it’s intelligent, interesting, creative and truly allows the reader insight into the characters by telling the story from both Jack and Chloe’s perspectives. The dual story is never repetitive, but instead just gives fantastic insight into the characters and how the story unfolds.

About the Author

Brian C. Nelson is Associate Professor of Educational Technology at Arizona State University. An instructional designer and learning theorist, he has published and presented extensively on the viability of educational virtual worlds for situated inquiry learning and assessment. Dr. Nelson’s recent writing addresses issues related to the design and evaluation of educational games, with a focus on theory-based design principles. He is currently a Co-Principal Investigator on the SAVE Science Virtual World project, and was the Project Designer on the River City project. He was a Co-Principal Investigator on two MacArthur Foundation Digital Learning grants and was also a Co-Principal Investigator on the SURGE project, creating video games to teach high school physics.

Benjamin E. Erlandson is Assistant Professor of Instructional Science and Technology with an emphasis in Digital Media in the School of Information, Technology, and Communication Design (ITCD) at California State University, Monterey Bay. In addition to teaching several courses in interactive media design/development and instructional design, Dr. Erlandson runs the Virtual Environments for Situated Inquiry of Complexity (VESIC) Lab, conducting various research studies investigating the usefulness of meso-immersive 2D and 3D virtual environments―much like those used for many popular computer games―for learning about complex systems.

About the Author
Asha Philar was born in Bangalore, India, and went to school and college there. She worked briefly with a finance corporate and moved to Surathkal after her marriage to Dr Satish Philar, senior faculty of the Karnataka Regional Engineering College. Asha's early interests in cooking were inspired by her mother Sushila Aroor and her sister-in-law Padmini Aroor who had range as well as a passion for perfection. Later, in Surathkal, her mother-in-law Sumathi Philar enriched her repertoire of recipes, guided her in the intricacies of traditional food-making and extended her horizons beyond food as a kitchen-bound activity. Surathkal also gave her the opportunity to learn from friends on the campus, and to teach. To help her sons Tarun and Nikhil and their wives Aparna and Shantal, she created a private website with food, remedies and housekeeping guidelines. Her other interests include painting, sewing and writing. Asha and Satish live in Bangalore and periodically in the US. They have four grandchildren-Milind, Nidhi, Trisha and Shriya.

Our neighbors were konkani and I used to love their food.
After repeated inquiry I came to know that there was no good book for konkani cooking in english.

I then came across this book luckily and bought it.
What a gem.... Very nicely cataloged recipes. It has a good and wide collection of konkani recipes.
I am so happy . Now I can satisfy my craving for konkani delicacies whenever I want, thanks to this book.

Great reference book!

I've been in the field for a few years now and I finally found a book that explains and summarizes the forecasting theory so good. This is my reference book now. I use it to teach my engineers in the subject and for personal reference as well. It provides new information that wasn't available 10 years ago. The explanaitions are good and the examples clear.

Wonderful book

I purchased this book at the airport on my way out of Bangkok on a business trip earlier this year. Of the variety of books that I read before and after the trip, this is my favorite. In Thailand, Dr. Corness writes a column for the Pattaya Mail and this book is essentially a collection of newspaper columns. Don't expect a continuous story but rather a random assortment of articles. He has a quirky sense of humor that some people will love and others just won't understand.

Dr. Corness is a doctor and auto racing enthusiast. He is a Scot born in Northern Ireland who spent most of his life in Australia before moving to Thailand. He fell in love with Thailand as a tourist and eventually decided to move there where he married a Thai woman, purchased a home, and so on. I mention all of this because clearly he has had the opportunity to experience Thailand from a number of interesting perspectives and this book does a great job covering these perspectives.

One warning -- many people unfortunately associate Thailand with the country's sex industry and expect that when reading books about Thailand. There is much more to the country than this and you will be disappointed if you purchase this book expecting much about this industry. Dr. Corness does touch upon these topics in a few chapters (in an entertaining fashion) but not in any sort of level of detail.

This was a very enjoyable and helpful read. I would encourage anyone who is planning to move to Thailand to read this book as a pre-orientation to the culture and the Thai Ways. It is very helpful for foreigners (farangs) to understand more about Thailand. Having lived in Thailand already 5 years when I read it, it was also an enjoyable read for me to be able to identify with someone else who has experienced similar things.
