About the Author

James M. Rubenstein received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1975. He is Professor of Geography at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, where he teaches urban and human geography, and where he helped develop the new Sustainability co-major in the Institute for the Environment & Sustainability.

In addition to The Cultural Landscape , he is also the author of Pearson’s Contemporary Human Geography , Second Edition and Introduction to Contemporary Geography . He is often invited to give talks and presentations at colleges, high schools, and professional meetings.� Rubenstein works as a regional consultant for the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank and he conducts research in the automotive industry. He is often interviewed by the media on automotive and economic issues, and has published three books on the subject: The Changing U.S. Auto Industry: A Geographical Analysis (Routledge); Making and Selling Cars: Innovation and Change in the U.S. Auto Industry (The Johns Hopkins University Press); and Who Really Made Your Car? Restructuring and Geographic Change in the Auto Industry (W.E. Upjohn Institute, with Thomas Klier).

Great for AP Human Geography

Currently I am taking an AP Human Geography class in my high school and this is the book we were assigned to buy. This book has wonderful charts and pictures along with descriptions. This book goes into depth and doesn't only touch the surface. I recomend this book to AP Human Geography teachers and students!

what a wonderful contrast it would be to go into more depth ...

This book is a textbook for AP Human Geography, and as a teacher I have to say that it should be more balanced in its presentation. For example, on the chapter on Population, it compares the population policy of China (the one child policy) to that of India. It refers to China's one child policy as "successful" without mentioning that there are six million MISSING girls in China as a result of this brutal policy. It refers to India's population policy as less successful, when in fact India has a much higher respect for Faith and family. That is very concerning.

My students talked about these slanted views throughout the year, so this bias is noticed. We tried to add to the curriculum with inspriational stories which add so much when studying developing nations. For example, when studying about the World Bank and the IMF, what a wonderful contrast it would be to go into more depth on Grameen Bank, which was founded by a professor from Tennessee who realized that he could free an entire village from economic slavery - with less than a $30 investment. Thus began the success story in empowering villages -and Muhammad Yunus thus created a bank owned by the women of small villages empowering other women. Compare that to the failure rates of the IMF and the World Bank! We need textbooks that inspire with what individuals can do in this world, and to create these textbooks would modify the feeling that too many people have that the problems of the world are so great that only big government can solve them. Better textbooks would be a good place to start.

solid textbook

This text is an easy read for both the eyes and brain due to the font choice and layout. Illustrations and photographs are visually pleasing as well. I am a pseudogeography junkie with a passion for the human experience, development, and social justice issues around the globe. This text worked well in these areas of my learning experience. A social work major is responsible for the content of this review! Well Done, however, a bit on the expensive side.

Not all that great.

For me, the book worked because our instructors used many of the vignettes and questions on our exam.

However, for the general student of medicine, this book is ridiculous. For example, after presenting a short patient vignette, it asks for a differential. Working with friends, I tried to come up with three reasonable diagnoses given the symptoms. The book would give three, but two of the three would be completely UNreasonable. It would say something like, "Diagnosis #1 relies on findings of A, B, C, and D. However, our patient does not report A, C, or D, so this diagnosis is unlikely."

I didn't find that to be at all helpful.

Additionally, the multiple choice and matching questions are quite easy, probably too easy to be useful for anyone more than a few months into your training, regardless of field (RN, PA, MD, etc...).

All in all, I think this book is a waste of money for most people. Just read the margin notes in Bates, and review the tables at the end of each chapter, and you'll get a much better review than this will provide.

This is helpful for a general review, but it absolutely does not take place from reading all of the textbook material. The only way to do well on the tests is to have read the text book, focusing on the pink highlighted areas.

This workbook is a great tool, the case studies are very complete, the rationales provided in the back of the book are helpful in understanding the differential diagnoses.

You still need to cast. You still need to present flies in such a manner that fish will accept them. But though no one has ever failed to catch a trout because they knew too much about aquatic insects, plenty of anglers have not caught as big a fish, or as many fish as they could have caught, because they failed to understand the importance of matching a hatch. This is particularly true when fishing for large, wild, selective trout—the ones we all really want to catch.

In this book, I try to relieve some of the reticence about trout stream insects that makes many anglers feel inadequate and uneasy. Many excellent books provide very detailed information about specific hatches. But that’s not this book’s goal. This book is written for new anglers who want a basic understanding of aquatic insects or more seasoned fly fishers who want to take their skills to the next level; those who want to know not only if their flies will work but why they’ll work as well. I remember when I was first learning to fly fish, and I read about complicated Latin names or confusing stages of aquatic insect development. I was lost. It was as if the whole fly fishing world was born knowing about these things, and I was left out. This book’s aim is to provide basic aquatic insect knowledge that will not only help you to understand more about trout stream insects, but it will also help you catch more trout on your next fishing trip. It will help you to understand why you should tie one fly to your leader rather than another to imitate the hatches you encounter.

Paul Weamer is a Fly Fisherman magazine contributing editor and the author or co-author of several fly fishing books. He is an accomplished photographer, specializing in aquatic insect macro photography, and has contributed photos to Fly Fisherman, The Catskill Regional Guide, and The Drake, as well as his own and several other writer’s books. Paul is a former licensed guide, working the Upper Delaware and Beaverkill Rivers for trout and smallmouth bass, and Cattaraugus, Elk, and Walnut Creeks for steelhead. I'm old enough to have learned my fishing tactics from Ray Bergman's "Trout", and to have read "Matching The Hatch" in its first printing, Mind you, I will not be throwing out Flick, Marinaro, Caucci/Nastasi, or Swisher/Richards, but I will now be turning to The Bug Book most of the time, because it is that thorough, that concise, and that good.

Why didn't I find this book sooner?

This is the book I was looking for! Great explanation of the life cycles of the 3 major insect groups we use fly fishing and how various flies imitate them. Also good coverage of terrestrials and other insects. I plan on reading this several times and making notes to take stream side until I'm more familiar with all of the information presented.

I've always liked Caroline Cooney

I've always liked Caroline Cooney. This book was really good. The time travel is fun. Cooney goes into detail about each year the story is set. I can see the characters and the settings. I can see the world as they see it. It brought out emotion as these characters struggle. The modern day father will really tick you off and he deserves it.

This not a horrible book!

I recently read the scathing review of this book posted in February. I think from an adult perspective one can see the cliches and flaws, but this is meant for a twelve year old and older. I honestly enjoyed the storyline and yes, it would have been great if they delved deeper into the characters, plot, etc. but again this is a young adult novel. I liked the premise, the speaking style, and most of all I was a fan when the first book came out in 1995. I was enamored with the story at the time and am very excited to read all of the books in their succession. I had to wait years for the story to continue! So, for those fans of time travel, young adult fiction, and love/romance stories will enjoy this. I can guarantee it.

An Important, Informed, and Practical Book

In Mathematics and Statistics for Financial Risk Management ("MSFRM") Michael Miller has produced a very interesting effort that enjoys a unique position amongst the choices we have these days in risk management and the mathematics of risk management books. First, what this book is not: a foundational treatise brimming with abstraction and generalities. Proposition. Theorem. Lemma. Let there be a risky asset V such that... Let the price of the underlying asset follow the following process... &c. This book doesn't have the breadth of a bottom up treatment, with the exception of some appendix material and a couple of necessary diversions; rather, it assumes a certain level of sophistication from the reader, no more, and opts for practicality and depth. And this is a good thing! There are more than enough highly general treatments already in existence to choose from. Readers or autodidacts with a more mathematical or independent tilt can perhaps begin from a more general place, although the problems presented in MSFRM make the book potentially valuable to anyone. What level is assumed in MSFRM? Basic probability, calculus, and matrix algebra (although the former and latter is treated in chapters 3 and 6, respectively), perhaps consistent with an analyst or associate dealing with practical challenges. This book is not for a quant. What this book is: the stylized approach is top down instead of bottom up, obviating the need for excessive mathematical generalities, the very generalities that often leave an important readership frustrated, alienated, and confused about how to get from point A to point B. The author, on the back jacket, indicates he has "worked in risk management for more than ten years,..."; clearly, over this time, he's observed certain problems cropping up again and again, so much so that he decided to write a book on how to operate the tools to handle these problems. This is my inference since many of the ideas, problems, and tools discussed in the book have been a constant part of my professional life for over a decade. While impossible to be exhaustive, the material that made the cut is certainly well-informed and relevant, as Miller allocates some of the intellectual capital he has developed over the years and provides concrete problems that are interesting and unique. Subjects that I felt were presented well and supplemented with interesting problems for people to think about:

- Chapter 3 Basic Statistics: application to portfolio variance and hedging
- Chapter 5 Hypothesis Testing & Confidence Intervals: initially you expect a stock's vol to be 45%, but you have a estimated a different vol ex post from empirical data. Is this difference meaningful at a certain confidence level? How is VaR and Expected Shortfall related?
- Chapter 7 Vector Spaces: This chapter is interesting as it spends a bit of time on PCA and applications to yield curve decomposition and even cites current recent research in systemic risk measurement
- Chapter 9 Time Series Models: Spurious correlation, AR() processes and applications to rate models.

Stylistically I would classify MSFRM as a mixture of Carol Alexander's Quant Methods in Finance (cf chapters 6 or 9) and Euan Sinclair's Vol Trading (a book stemming from Sinclair's experience as an options' trader and hedger). It is very easy to comment on things that I would have liked to have seen more of or that I deem relevant. For example: applications of the materials covered to option markets or other asset classes in addition to stocks and bonds; the Cholesky decomposition, ubiquitous in our work, is introduced in chapter 6 but not really extended to, say, a multi-asset simulation or pricing and greek calculation (although I get the impression the author tried to stay away from potential coding problems). That being said, editing what stays and what goes is a thorny problem that can easily become impossible and for which there is no right answer and depends on one's perspective and experience. Judging MSFRM on its own merits I give it a solid 4 stars with the caveat that there is a select demographic out there that will find the book to be 5 stars. The people that will find this book the most useful will be able to immediately implement most of the material presented in a practical manner (note that I didn't download the excel examples provided by the publisher, but they are available). As someone that manages hedging and risk management teams myself, this is certainly a book that I would recommend to practitioners. Finally, it is clear that the author and the people he thanked in the acknowledgments spent quite a bit of time proofreading the final copy. The writing is clear, well-articulated, and thoughtful.

Excellent book

This is an excellent book to grasp the basics of financial risk management. Everything in the book is explained from scratch and the concepts are very well exemplified with real life situations. This is the prescribed text book for my Risk Management class and is by far one of the best courses I have taken. As a matter of fact, the book's author conducts this course and I am highly impressed with the course material, thanks to this text book. I would totally recommend the book.

An Excellent foundation book

I gave this book five stars because, the book is easy to read and the author did a good job in explaining the concepts covered in the books. The problems at the end of the chapters were helpful for testing my understanding of concepts covered. I will recommend it to anyone interested in the mathematical and statistical foundations for computational finance.
