Grade 2-4–Whodathunkit? A Fibonacci counting book! Ever since a 13th-century Italian mathematician described this intriguing numeric sequence, people have been discovering this pattern everywhere. Hulme runs through a Fibonacci count from 1 to 89, introducing each number in a colorful spread that shows the numeral as the sum of the two that came before it (1, 1, 1+1=2, 1+2=3, etc.). The amounts are represented visually by groups of species (e.g., 3+5=8 is illustrated with three leopards and five tigers). The simple rhyming text also points out physical characteristics (talons, teeth, seahorse tails, etc.) that reflect Fibonacci sequencing. Schwartz's handsome, realistic acrylics add impact to the text (though the shells come up one short). An author's note offers a brief history of the subject and gives suggestions for finding these sequences in nature. A diagram provides some visualization of the curve that can be plotted from the numbers, but does not clarify the concept. While some youngsters may be intrigued by this simplistic look at a new method of counting, it is difficult to determine for whom this book is intended. Wild Fibonacci: Nature's Secret Code Revealed

Although this book has some pretty pictures and some basic information about Fibonacci, it fails to provide good connections between the pictures and the Fibonacci sequence. The text, in rhyme, has nothing to do with Fibonacci. So, although the pictures are pretty, the book fails at it's most fundamental point, it fails to illustrate how Fibonacci numbers are seen in nature.

You cannot give this book to a child and have them understand the connection of the Fibonacci sequence to nature without outside help.

A good choice showing children the beauty in Mathematics

Wild Fibonacci is a beautifully illustrated book that introduces the reader to the Fibonacci sequence and how it appears in nature. For those not familiar with it, the Fibonacci sequence is 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34 and so on where the next number is found by adding the two before it (e.g. 2+3=5, 3+5=8).

Author Joy Hulme starts with a clear and simple explanation of the concepts, giving the most commonly claimed examples of where the Fibonacci numbers appear in Nature. Then, with pictures and rhyming verse aimed at the younger audience, she cleverly integrates the formula of the sequence (e.g. 2+3=5) with pictures of animals who have body parts (tusk, tooth, talon, or tail) whose curvature appears to fit a spiral.

The book is an excellent choice for parents wanting to instill a love of Mathematics in children because it shows its relevance by linking it to Nature. The rhymes stumble occasionally, but make up for it by being chock full of information for the inquisitive mind. It teaches, addition, number sequences and geometry. The major shortcoming of the book is that it tries too hard to fit animal's shapes to the curvature of the Golden Spiral, the "equiangular spiral" formed by Fibonacci squares (shown in the book). The author seems to suggest any equiangular spiral is a Golden Spiral. The sea shells shown have a spiral pattern but clearly do not grow at the same rate as the Golden Spiral, an error that will not be lost on a bright young reader. This makes it unsuitable for the high school level.

(The Fibonacci numbers (and the Golden Ratio) appear in plants but not animals - with the exception of bees)

Altogether, the book is a wonderful addition to a child's library.

If you like Fibonacci, you'll love it

Having been fascinated by numbers all my life and absolutely enchanted with Fibonacci, this book, though aimed at a younger reader, is fascinating and most enjoyable. It is an excellent introduction for a young mathematician that can also be enjoyed as a parent/child reader. It also should be in every elementary school library. Highly recommended.

Are you reading Liz Schulte yet?

I was hooked on Liz's brand of magic since Dark Corners. I now own Dark Corners, Secrets, Choices and Cupid Painted Blind. I'm absolutely addicted to her writing style. She has a way of bringing you inside a world you might other wise over look. Holden Smith is not your average bad boy and I consider myself quite the connoisseur of the fictional bad boy. There is love and lust and action and betrayal. It hits every literary taste bud dead on. If you aren't reading the Guardian Trilogy yet, you should be. You are truly missing out if you haven't picked up any of Liz's work. This is hands down a must read and I can easily say this is the BEST 2nd book in a series and I've got quite of few series under my belt.

HAD TO READ

The Guardian and Jinn Trilogy series are so interwoven I'm posting the same review for them all. It didn't help that I read them back to back in less than a week. They were that good. I HAD to know what happened next.

I hate to post yet another fan girl review. BUT I so love Liz Schulte's writing style. She is my favourite type of romance author. Her characters are so well developed. There are moments you like them, dislike them, worry about them, wonder if they're just S.O.S. or in another words people you actually know.

I loved how in each book when there was a scene that took place in another book that was occurring at the same time (The Easy Bake Coven series) she remembers to include it. That helps believe that all the characters actually do know one another. I hate when an author does a spin off series but the series it spins off from is never mentioned.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Olivia and Holden's relationship play out. I'd have never thought the story line could go through 6 books without being flat and predictable but it did. I was sorry to see it come to an end but also felt like a good writer she new it was time.

I am hoping to see Corbin, Sy and Maggie in a series too, and oh yes I'm looking for Paolo. Just in case Ms.Schulte was looking for suggestions.

I'm kind of worried that I'm down to my last book published at this point, Sweet Little Lies. I don't want to seem bossy or anything but now that she's turned me into an addict I think it's only fair that she feed my habit.

Couldn't stop until the end :)

After reading the first book, "Secrets" in under 2 days... I just had to purchase the 2nd, "Choices". What a fantastic read, I could barely put it down. I like that the author switches between characters' points of view, 1 chapter Olivia, 1 chapter Holden and the next Quintus. The twist in the plot is original and I am dying to know when the next one, "Consequences" will be available.

His younger brother Vasubandhu wrote the Abhidharmakosa before Asanga converted him to Mahayana Buddhism. Yet the Kosa is written in verse, usual for Mahayana treatises, while the Samuccaya follows the traditional prose question and answer style of the older Pali Abhidharma texts.
Walpola Rahula, in preparing his 1971 French translation of this Mahayana text from the Sanskrit, Chinese, and Tibetan, has brought to bear on its many technical terms his extensive background and great expertise in the Pali canon. J. W. de Jong says in his review of this work:"Rahula deserves our gratitude for his excellent translation of this difficult text."
Sara Boin-Webb is well known for her accurate English translations of Buddhist books from the French. She has now made accessible in English Rahula's French translation, the first into a modern language, of this fundamental text.

Well, Asanga, founder of the Yogacara branch of Mahayana, must have thought there was good reason to do so, or he would never have bothered to write this book!
There is a story about Asanga and his younger brother Vasubandhu. Vasubandhu had written the Abhidharmakosa, which went on to become the classic of "Hinayana" Abhidharma. Later on, after talking with his older brother Asanga, Vasubandhu converted to Mahayana. Asanga had by then apparently already written the Abhidharmasamuccaya. But despite the story, this book seems to have a lot in common with his brother's Abhidharmakosa. I guess that is because the Abhidharma, whether Hinayana or Mahayana, contains the basic teachings of the Buddha. I do get the sense that the Abhidharmakosa is a compendium of the basic Buddhist teachings that was skillfully put together, after these teachings were sorted out, by a brilliant thinker, Vasubandhu; while the Abhidharmasamuccaya is a compendium of the basic Buddhist teachings that was put together by a practiced meditator, Asanga. Both of these books are heavy going, but nonetheless fascinating to read and compare.

About the Author
Tess and Mark Szamatulski have owned their homebrew store, Maltose Express in Monroe, CT USA for over ten years. They are authors of the best selling homebrew recipe book, CLONEBREWS Homebrew Recipes for 150 Commercial Beers (Storey Books, 1998). They also write the monthly "Beer Style" column for Brew Your Own Magazine and numerous cover features and other articles. Mark and Tess teach homebrew classes, beer tasting and appreciation classes at local colleges. Mark is a certified beer judge. Many of the beers brewed from Beer Captured have won numerous ribbons and awards, and a few have won Brewer's Cup and have been brewed by commercial breweries and brewpubs.

I just came from the library last night and viewed over 10 different brewing books, including 4 recipe books. I get home today and my new Beer Captured came in the mail. WOW. What a book. If you're looking for the top of the line recipe book, then this is the one, without a doubt. I researched myself and this book blew away the others. After reading this book and going through a few recipes, I wanted to brew a batch right then and there. Instead, I drank a few! Wow. I see what the other review meant by the drool on the cover. This book will be used A LOT by me and any friends I loan it to. Way to go Mark and Tess!!! When is Beer Captured II coming out?????????? I CAN'T WAIT!
Don't let anyone fool you with other clone recipe books, this is THE one.

Very good book on the subject, get it.

By the authors of "Clone Brews" Beer Captured is also a book of copies of 150 commercially produced beers from around the world. I found this book to be an improvment over the Szmatulski's first effort in that with the book's new look you get a helpful hints section on each recipe along with serving suggestions. Divided into four sections pages 1-14 tell a lot about brewing (probably not quite enough for a complete novice), followed by pages 15-164, beer recipes, section three (165-174)has recipes for foods involving beer in them someplace (some sound very tasty. Part 4, pages 175-195,contains lists of mash guidelines, water mineral and modification charts, several other charts not given in most books that should really help in brewing something drinkable.
