This book has a few good points, but overall the author misses the fact ...

This book has a few good points, but overall the author misses the fact that while she is talking about why people don't think for themselves, and she gives examples from her own life experience, pointing out how government agencies are resistant to change, the agencies she's worked in, by her own admission, were full of progressives. Yet, she constantly points to the Republicans as having a lot of flaws, while mentioning that the progressives have a few challenges but neglecting to notice that they have as many flaws as the Republicans, and that the progressives/Democrats tend to lie to their constituents as well. I read this book thinking she may give a fresh, unbiased insight into these current problems facing the USA, but instead, according to her, it's the Republicans fault. While the Republicans certainly deserve credit for the messes they've created, she isn't thinking for herself in this book, but repeating party line politics, which shows she has very little of her own thought. I was disappointed as I was expecting a fresh insight into a pressing problem in American politics and thought. On the thought side (outside of political discussions), a few good points were made. I would not recommend this book.

How to think out of the box, from someone firmly inside one. The author makes astute observations, and writes multiple pages with intuitive clarity, then verges off course with slightly relevant side observations that are very distracting. As I began reading, I went from being intrigued, to bemused then finally annoyed by this book. The most interesting thing I observed was how the author goes to great length in describing how today's society, especially the Conservative USA society, are dogmatic, tribal to an extreme, regemented in the box thinkers, this from a self professed "Progressive" writer who throughout the book, demonstrates the very characteristics she is critical of in others. The book has value, many of the ideas are great and should be explored further, but the author may benefit from spending more time utilizing the "introspective" analysis that she recommends for others.

About the Author
Darrell Max Craig received his initiation into the martial arts in 1956 while stationed in Japan. In 1968, he became the Texas Open Karate Champion. The same year he was ranked 4th in the US in Okinawan weapons. In 1971, he started studying the art of Kendo and has participated in five World Kendo Championships. In 1985 he was a member of the US World team in Paris, France. He has choreographed martial arts scenes for a number of feature films and is the author of 7 books, including IAI: The Art of Drawing the Sword. He has been involved with numerous S.W.A.T. teams both federal and state as their self-defense mentor. He holds the following ranks in budo:
7th Dan Kyoshi, Shihan Kendo & Junse Jujitsu
6th Dan Kyoshi Karate & Iaido, Mugai Ryu
5th Dan Kyoshi Kobudo, Seishin Kai (Okinawan weaponry)
4th Dan Kodokan Judo & Japanese Police Aikido
Sensei Craig lives in Houston, Texas where he established the Houston Budokan, Inc. (www.houstonbudo.com) as a center for the study of Japanese martial arts. He retired from competition in 1986, but continues to coach and teach at his dojo.

Excellent resource on Ju Jitsu

Excellent book. Sensei Craig does an excellent job of explaining the historical aspects, his personal experience with Ju Jitsu as well as discussing techniques. If you are looking to learn techniques they are here, but you have to understand the system in which they are taught, primarily Happo-No-Kuzushi. The drawings are a bit crude but do help to some degree. The techniques are learned through his descriptions not the pictures and a background in Judo, Aikido, Jiu Jitsu will help. I studied Hapkido which is strongly based on Aiki jujitsu and many of techniques are very familiar to me.

the book in and of itself is pretty good (though I agree with issues on illustrations as somebody else has pointed out; had it had arrows describing movement it would be more helpful. But none of these are why I give it a 2 star).

However, the material in this book is essentially THE SAME as "Japan's ultimate martial art: Jujistu before 1882". If you own either one of them don't buy the other. This information is not explicitly pointed out and I didn't compare table of contents (but even if I did I wouldn't be sure they were basically the same thing). That's why I decided to give a 2 star.

Very disappointing and misleading

Japanese Jiu-jitsu: Secret Techniques of Self-Defense by Darrell Craig

Other reviewers have already commented on the content and illustrations in Craig's book so my review focuses exclusively on two aspects of the book. First the title is misleading. The Japanese spell it as Jujutsu (see official Romaji spelling), NOT Jiu-Jitsu and Craig who has lived and studied in Japan should know better. This spelling, Jiu-Jitsu, refers to the Brazilian version of the art which is very different from Japanese Jujutsu. Second, the cover photo is also misleading. What you see is two fighters dressed in BJJ or competition judo outfits its engaging in what BJJ is well known for, grappling on the ground. Japanese Jujutsu is a combat art (offense and self defense) and much of the fighting takes place in a standing position. The goal is to terminate the assailant in a few seconds and then take on the next assailant. Going to the ground is risky and time consuming and it is a practice that is discouraged in Japanese Jujutsu. Of course, one has to be able to fight on the ground if the situation demands but the cover photo of this book suggests ground fighting to be the primary focus. Further, when practitioners of Japanese Jujutsu go to the ground they are trained to strike vital areas, gouge out the eyes, dislocate fingers and strike the back of the neck (among other combat techniques) and not to embrace their assailant the way that is shown in the cover photo. Self Defense (and there are no secret techniques any more) is simply an adaptation and application of the combat techniques of Japanese Jujutsu to fit the demands of survival in dangerous situations that include restraining the assailant, causing the assailant pain or simply discouraging him from continuing his attack by means of deflection, joining and controlling techniques.

Transparent Power (“Tomei na Chikara”) became a Japanese language non-fiction bestseller in Japan, yet for over a decade no full English translation ever saw the light of day. In fact, the author of Transparent Power is a math teacher — a respected professor at a major university whose life is firmly grounded in logic, rational thought and empirical study. But when he happened to meet one of the men who had mastered this force they called Aiki, he discovered something beyond his wildest imagination: that logic and reason come up empty-handed when faced with the blunt reality of a controllable force that can totally negate the strength of a large man and then send him flying across the room. Not a martial arts throw or a technique using muscles, but a genuine, experiential POWER that allows a 95 year-old man to toss 30 year-old bodybuilders, judo and karate masters around like beanbags.

The author, Dr. Kimura, is still teaching mathematics. But his life changed completely through daily encounters with this mysterious force and with Sagawa Sensei, the only teacher alive who could command it. Transparent Power is Kimura’s record of both Sagawa’s life and teachings and what little is known about Sagawa’s own teacher, the man who discovered Aiki.

About the Author
Tatsuo Kimura began his study of martial arts with kendo from age 12, reaching the rank of 3rd dan. He practiced Aikido from age 15 to age 30, studying with Morihei Ueshiba Sensei and Seigo Yamaguchi Sensei (9th dan Shihan of Aikikai Hombu Dojo), and received the rank of 5th dan. He studied Kashima Shin-ryu sword under Minoru Inaba Sensei for some years beginning at age 23.

His first visit with Sagawa Sensei was 28 November, 1978, and Sensei finally allowed him to become a student beginning 8 January, 1979. From that time he trained with Sagawa Sensei more than any other student, over 4,000 times. In 1993 Sagawa Sensei awarded him the kyoju dairi license, and in 1994 he completed 10-gen jikiden koshu.

Dr. Kimura is a Professor of Mathematics with numerous published books and papers in that field. He is also the author of Discovering Aiki: My 20 Years With Yukiyoshi Sagawa Sensei.

EXCELLENT BOOK FOR ALL MARTIAL ARTISTS

Excellent book! For me it's like "Training's Thinking Bible".
Through this book we can see the depth of Sagawa Sensei's art, the attitude for real usage of Daitoryu in fighting (both, Sagawa Sohan and Takeda Sensei), the training behind the skill, and the importance of thinking instead of mindless repetition. This book is a treasure.

I'd like to publicly express my thanks to Kimura Tatsuo Sensei and all involved in translation and publication of this book.

I'm a student of Kimura Sensei since 2001. Although the description of Sagawa Sohan's techniques may seem impossible or far-stretched to some people, all I can personally say is that when I met Tatsuo Kimura Sensei and felt his technique of Aiki I was very deeply surprised. It is impossible to actually describe, imagine or even believe after seeing it. The only way is to feel for oneself this unbelievable force that either gently yet very suddenly causes the human body to collapse.

At the time of writing the original Japanese edition (1994-5) some adnvice of Sagawa Sohan was well ahead of time. Only recently sport scientists and psychologists discover such various theories. This is the book which opened my mind in Martial Arts.

I highly recommend "Transparent Power" to any serious martial artist, no matter what style. It may change your entire approach to your own Martial Art and your training and practice.

unusual but very good book

If you looking for the hidden part of aikido or aikiarts this book will be very useful.

It does not give exercises or anything else.

It explains the context in which the exercises need to be done.

Not for the beginning student, but useful for students with twenty or more years of practice who are looking for

further progression.

Mani's many facets of his cinematic mind, his choices, execution and thought process behind his character's decisions! Pure joy!

I am a proud byproduct of Maniratnam era of cinema. In a country of compliance, his characters were truly rebellious against the existing norms without the over dramatic heroism. The sense of common man realism combined with their innate rebellion against the societal norms and traditions has created our generation(ones who grew up in 80's and 90's) who is now paving the way for the next one. The format of this book was easy to digest and Mani does seem to be a master of justification about his characters decisions. It helps the true fan of cinema to watch his movies with fresh perspectives. While his editing decisions worked perfectly during the much-restricted, per-liberalized India, they seem to be way off the mark in his recent movies. If at all there is a Director whose movies need a Director's cut, it is Maniratnam. I think there needs to be a simple, uncomplicated, clean arch stories like Alaipaayuthe, Anjali, Mouna Raagam for the masses and a special director's cut for movies like Yuva(Why,why,why would Lallan not return back?) and Raavanan(so badly wish those ten characters were talking to him,making it easy for the viewer to understand his eccentricities). This book is a great journey into Mani's thinking, execution and choices he makes on his movies. A must for any movie fan to understand one of the world's greatest directors from India!

Excellent Book

An excellent book providing insights into the Mani Ratnam way of making movies. Baradwaj Rangan manages to ask the right questions most of the times. At times Mani Ratnam seems to dead bat criticism and defends creative decisions, mostly when Rangan questions whether the quality of characters mirror reality. The best parts of the book are when Mani Ratnam takes the conversation forward when describing how some portions of his movies are derived from his own experiences, like the daughter's signing by the bedside in Guru, and what lead to Bombay and the struggles he faced to release the film. Slightly disappointed that the book does not have a chapter on Kadal as promised in the cover, but can not complain.

Awesome book! For people who are ardent Mani Sir's fans this book helps to know the "grammar" of his films better. Some good insights towards what he strives to achieve through his films. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The conversational format gives an authentic feel that you're listening to Mani Sir himself and Rangan delivers what he promises!
