This book is out of date.

While everything that Richard K Harrison says about this book it true, the unfortunate fact is that this book was published in 2008. Microsoft has since shifted it's REST service effort out of Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) and into ASP.Net MVC. In short, the WCF REST Toolkit is unsupported and Microsoft now recommends using ASP.Net Web API for REST.

I uses obsolete technologies: Silverlight 2 and WPF which is not RESTful. Silverlight is currently at version 5 and I don't know of any company using it. This book should not be sold.

Very useful

You can configure WCF to do so many things, its good to have a book dedicated to running with one architectural style. This book has been by my desk for a majority of the last two weeks as we were prototyping heavily. Obviously if you're doing stuff with SOAP and aren't interesting in changing your style, a more general book would be more applicable.

Don't Send Me to Africa!

Imagine this. One of your best friends, a boomer, is happy in his or her career. Well respected. Active in church and community. Pretty good life. Then...you toss in a God-inspired big idea: become a difference maker in another country!

Don Parrott has penned this God-inspired big idea and, along the way, expertly tackles the Top-10 reasons, excuses and avoidance techniques for Christ-followers to thoughtfully consider being--and here's the word--missionaries!

The first chapter's title nails it: "Lord, Don't Send Me to Africa, and Other Bold Statements of Faith." He writes, "The two chief challenges we encounter with Boomers who are seriously considering making the move to Christian mission work are faith and finances. They may come in different packages, varying circumstances and intertwined, but they most often can be reduced to these two obstacles."

Parrott's book features over 50 inspiring and amazing stories of Boomers who have crossed the line (and often an ocean) to leave North America for mission service in other countries. Like the plumber husband and x-ray technician wife: Dave was open, but his wife? No way. Then a door opened: a mission work in Southeast Asia put out the call for--you guessed it--a plumber and a radiographer! They said yes.

Boomers--the sandwich generation--have aging parents and boomerang college grads back at home. Plenty of excuses to say, "Not now, Lord." So Parrott hits these objections and more head-on, but with gentleness, insight, biblical wisdom and humor. He doesn't sugar coat the opportunities. "Chapter Five: Expect Spiritual Attack" is required reading.

What's amazing--stunning actually--are the stories and stories and stories of people in all walks of life who find their calling and their fulfillment in overseas service. Church planters, teachers, doctors and nurses will still be needed, but Parrott references the Finishers Project website that has thousands of overseas opportunities for researchers, administrators, office managers, coaches, financial officers, anthropologists, construction supervisors, publishers, graphic artists, pilots, writers, IT directors, and hundreds of other career from over 80 mission agencies impacting the world.

Parrott, president of the Finishers Project, describes weekend conferences where he roams the audience asking about people's professions--and then asks a panel of mission agency representatives to list where those professions are needed around the world.

"Chapter Eight: Can I Really Contribute to Global Impact" is stunning! The last guy in the workshop room to be asked about his profession could hardly wait. "I'm a paper chemist," he announced. The room erupted in laughter. Like really--what mission agency needed a paper chemist? But...one did!

The paper chemist commented, "After the workshop I met with the mission mobilizers from Seattle who needed the paper chemist. They were displaying some wrapping papers and guest books made from handmade paper. The paper, in turn was made from Manila hemp, a nonwood material. By an amazing coincidence, I happen to have a specialization in making paper from nonwood materials such as cotton, flax, straw, and oh yes, hemp too. As I looked at a picture from the paper mill, I was stunned to see they were doing exactly the type of processing that corresponds with my expertise.

"In future conversation the project leader told me, `We are self-taught amateurs. We really need you to come to the Philippines and help us.' That was enough for me. It was clear that God has hooked me up with a ministry that needed my special knowledge. Wow!" (And he helped them reduce their costs by 90 percent!)

The book still had good questions that need to be considered

I work with a younger group of people who want to go deeper in their discipleship. The audience for this book seemed to be an older group who are in the middle of their career - career-changers as they are called. The book still had good questions that need to be considered, no matter what the age of the reader. I can still use this book when working with older saints who are looking at their lives and wondering if they have any options for investing their time and talent elsewhere.
It was not a waste of time or resources to buy this book at all. I just missed the target audience that this book was addressing.

J. Scott Duvall (PhD. Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) is professor of New Testament at Ouachita Baptist University. He is the coauthor with George H. Guthrie of Biblical Greek Exegesis: A Graded Approach to Learning Intermediate and Advanced Greek and with Terry G. Carter and J. Daniel Hays of the textbook Preaching God's Word: A Hands on Approach to Preparing, Developing and Delivering the Sermon.

J. Daniel Hays (ThM, Dallas Theological Seminary; PhD, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) is dean of the Pruet School of Christian Studies and professor of Old Testament at Ouachita Baptist University. He is the author of From Every People and Nation, and he has coauthored Grasping God's Word; Preaching God's Word; Journey into God’s Word; The Story of Israel: A Biblical Theology; Iraq: Babylon of the End Times?; Apocalypse; and The Dictionary of Biblical Prophecy. He teaches adult Sunday school at his local church in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and preaches frequently throughout the nation.

About the Author
Roy Treloar has been involved with the mechanical service industry since leaving school in 1973, becoming a full time lecturer, teaching plumbing in 1985. He is currently the curriculum development manager for the Professional Training Centre at Colchester Institute where he is responsible for various plumbing, heating, gas and electrical training and assessment programmes. Roy is author of several books, including two other highly successful textbooks published by Wiley-Blackwell, the Plumbing Encyclopaedia and Gas Installation Technology.

A great reference........If you live in Great Britain

Plumbing, 4th Edition covers plumbing in Britain, so much of the terminology is different, diagrams of toilets and other fixtures are not applicable and all measurements are metric. The sections on metal roofs and metal gutters could be helpful the the select few tradesman in the US who do that kind of work. For a US homeowner, this book contains vitually no useful information.

Can you improve yer motorcycle riding skills by reading a book? No doubt about it. Keith Code is founder and director of California Superbike Cornering Schools and has published a number of books on the subject of racing motorcycles on speed tracks. Although most of this book's focus is on handling race bikes, only the last two of its sixteen chapters are exclusively dedicated to racing. The book concentrates mostly on better controlling your speed while maneuvering your bike over varying racetrack conditions. As you'd expect, there is a major emphasis on turning: getting through the turn with increased mph and decreased time spent in [the turn] and [maintaining] adequate control of the bike. Code's overall approach to improving riding skills is to define the basics, and then to investigate the decisions you must make to ride well. He uses a great analogy: Each person has a fixed amount of attention while riding a motorcycle. This is represented as a $10 bill worth of attention. If you spend five dollars of it on one aspect of riding, you have only five dollars left for all the other aspects. Spend nine and you have only one dollar left, and so on. The aspects of riding he talks about are things like: Road characteristics: Constant-, increasing-, and. decreasing-radius turns, crested turns, series turns, positive- and negative-camber turns, and road surfaces. What you do: Riding is one thing; riding plus being aware of what you are doing is quite another. Making an effort to look at what you are doing while you are doing it. Your own evaluation of what you just did and what just happened: Things that can be thought over and changed if necessary. I like his teaching strategy. After isolating several specific principles, concepts, and techniques, each subsequent chapter effectively builds on what was previously presented to the point that if you didn't understand the concept and haven't yet experienced it, you'll want to get back on the road and try it out, read the book some more, then evaluate what you understand. About the Author
Andy Ibbott is an experienced journalist and former road test editor of Motor Cycle News. He was the first British coach employed in the UK by the California Superbike School, which now operates motorcycling courses at Silverstone, Rockingham and Cadwell Park. He has coached a number of up-and-coming 125cc and 250cc riders on the MotoGP scene.
