The role of psychology in corporate responsibility success

Much of the debate about corporate responsibility has to do with whether and how the movement can simultaneously create sustained value for businesses, society, and the environment. This book puts forth the idea that answering these questions requires a deep understanding of the psychological processes through which key stakeholders (especially customers and employees) derive personal value from corporate responsibility inputs. The authors are well qualified to make the case, having conducted numerous studies in this domain.

While most books talk about the importance of engaging stakeholders in corporate responsibility, few provide reliable, specific, or practical advice on how to do so. The main reason, I suspect, is that these books tend to lack a theoretical model from which to reason about stakeholder psychology. In contrast, Bhattacharya, Korschun, and Sen introduce a comprehensive model early in the book and proceed to unpack its insights and provide helpful, illustrative examples.

The main thrust of the authors' model is that corporate responsibility works when stakeholders believe that it not only provides personal benefits but also provides benefits for the company. This belief in the win-win scenario encourages perceptions of unity or overlap between the stakeholder's identity and the company's identity. In turn, perceptions of unity can fuel long term, company-favoring behaviors such as loyalty, positive word of mouth, purchasing, and volunteering.

Researchers will appreciate the book's theoretical grounding while practitioners and students will appreciate the book's clear exposition and rich discussion of the implications for designing and managing corporate responsibility initiatives. About the Author
LOUIS J. DiBERARDINIS, MS, CIH, CSP, is the Associate Director of the Environmental Medical Service at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a visiting lecturer on occupational health at the Harvard School of Public Health. He currently serves as chair of the ANSI Z.9.5 Subcommittee on Laboratory Ventilation and is a former president of the American Academy of Industrial Hygiene. He is the lead author of Guidelines for Laboratory Design (Wiley).

About the Author
Patrick Alain is an internationally known developer of some of the best-selling video games, including such titles as the multi-awarded blockbusters Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. The Leader Phrase Book was born out of Twitter and has quickly amassed a large following. Patrick was born in Paris, France, and has lived in a number of countries throughout his life. Fluent in five languages, he attributes much of his success to his ability to be a vital participant in large, multilingual teams. Patrick holds a master's degree from the University of Paris, and has lived in San Diego, California, since 2004.

Big waste of money

Working as a Trainer/Coach for a big, multinational corporation, I purchased "The Leader Phrase Book" in the hope that I could use it to support my colleagues who are aspiring leaders. Unfortunately I have been disappointed by most of what I read.

A powerful person, a leader, is never rude, because rudeness shows weakness. A leader is supposed to be a role model and a role model needs to have excellent communication skills and show exemplary behavior.

Someone who felt compelled to say "You better shut your mouth before you put your foot in it" (p.26), "Did someone forget their ADD meds" (p.52), "No wonder you don't have any friends" (p.83), "Kiss my ass" (p.85) etc. is acting in a childish, bullying manner and is not the type of person that I could respect or would look up to. Furthermore, "Don't get your knickers in a twist" (p.143) is downright sexist. If anyone I know used half the phrases in this book, I would consider them aggressive, insecure and ridiculous.

The title of the book is misleading, most of these phrases having nothing to do with leadership. I think that "The Smart-Ass Phrase Book" would be a more accurate title.

Laundry list, ethics needed

This book.was a complete disappointment. Basically, it was a list of language to use in certain situations. The author included sarcasm (not a great strategy for 21st century leaders) and idioms (again, not great) He also included Machiavellian techniques and offered ways to make someone look like a fool. this is not the type of leader I want to be!!

I love the different ways to say the same thing. I am told i come off strong so these help me find a softer way to say things. I d wish there was a best practice included. Besides memorization i don't know how else to replace my lingo with this one.

About the Author

John L. Comaroff is the Harold W. Swift Distinguished Service Professor of Anthropology at the University of Chicago and a Research Professor at the American Bar Foundation. Jean Comaroff�is the Bernard E. and Ellen C. Sunny Distinguished Service Professor of Anthropology and director of the Chicago Center for Contemporary Theory at the University of Chicago. Both are honorary professors at the University of Cape Town. Together they have coauthored or coedited numerous books, including Of Revelation and Revolution, volumes 1 and 2, Ethnography and the Historical Imagination, Millennial Capitalism and the Culture of Neoliberalism, and Law and Disorder in the Postcolony.
