Fred Stoller has played the annoying schnook in just about every sitcom you’ve seen on TV—Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond, Scrubs, Hannah Montana, My Name Is Earl—and was even a staff writer for Seinfeld, but he’s never found a solid gig. When it comes to Hollywood, it’s a case of always the bridesmaid and never the bride, except in his case he’s always the snarky waiter, the mopey cousin, or Man #2.
This hilarious and bittersweet rags-to-rags story of the hardest-working guy in showbiz follows Fred, who started his career as a stand-up comic, from set to set as he tries to find a permanent home for his oddball character. With candor, Fred shares stories of his great adventures pounding the Hollywood pavement, including a humiliating encounter with Billy Crystal, a disastrous one-night stand with Kathy Griffin, and plenty of awkward run-ins at craft service tables. And he always shares his ups and downs with his skeptical yet loving mother waiting by the phone in Brooklyn.
Everyone can relate to searching for a dream job or their next big break, and will root for Fred as he weaves his way through the cutthroat world of Tinseltown.

From Booklist
Comedic actor Stoller might not be a household name, but he’s been working in Hollywood for 25 years, making a living by scoring guest stints on sitcoms like Friends, Everybody Loves Raymond, and Seinfeld. After getting his start doing stand-up in New York, Stoller made his way to Los Angeles hoping to land the holy grail of acting jobs: a regular role on a television show. The quest proved harder than he’d imagined, but the numerous guest roles he booked involved playing characters that ran the gamut from scrawny construction worker to pesky suitor to goofy waiter. Stoller gets an unexpected break when Larry David offers him a job writing on Seinfeld, but the gig only lasts a season and serves to reinforce Stoller’s passion for acting. He finally lands a regular role on an animated show called Handy Manny playing a talking tool. Stoller’s stories about his experiences on the various studio sets, as well as his brushes with fame, make his memoir an enlightening and entertaining look into the life of a working actor. --Kristine Huntley

“Fred is as good at writing jokes as anyone in the business in any era. He's also quite an underrated storyteller. He won't be after you read this book. Great writer, great comic, exceptional friend.” (Jay Mohr)

A Unique View Of Show Business
By R. Jones
Having read Fred Stoller's very enjoyable Kindle Single, My Seinfeld Year, I was happy to see that he was telling more of his great behind-the-scenes-in-show-business stories in Maybe We'll Have You Back. I wasn't disappointed. He offers a funny, informative and entertaining look at two aspects of show business we don't hear much about - the TV guest star and the voice over artist (with some stories of stand-up comedy thrown in for good measure). This book should be on the "to read" list of every aspiring actor, any fan of stand-up or situation comedy, anyone interested in how TV shows get made, and people who like to laugh. In other words, pretty much everybody. As evidence of how good this book is, I read it while stuffed into a cramped airplane seat and it actually made me forget that I could barely move my legs for four hours.

Warm, wonderful & funny look inside TV from a guest star's perch
By Scott Whitmore
Wonderful inside look at the life of a TV guest star. There are plenty of chuckles and a few laugh-out-louds in this memoir by Fred Stoller, who we've all seen or heard on shows like Friends, Seinfeld, King of Queens, Everyone Loves Raymond, The Nanny ... and many, many more. The life of a guest star can be lonely, like being the new kid at school over and over and over again.
This should be required reading for anyone with stars in their eyes, hoping against hope to become the next big Hollywood success story. One telling vignette involved the author working on a short-run series called Vinnie & Bobby with a pre-Friends Matt LeBlanc. Although LeBlanc was a headliner in that sitcom, just months later he and Stoller were both auditioning for the same regional (not national) TV commercial.
Although the warts of a few famous names are brushed upon, this is no hatchet job (although one suspects the author could have gone that way, if it wasn't totally against his nature). Instead, Mr. Stoller goes out of his way to mention the big names who helped him in the business or who made him feel comfortable on their sets: Ray Romano, Kevin James, Fran Drescher and Treat Williams, to name just a few.
There are plenty of behind the scenes peeks at some of TV's biggest shows, including Seinfeld where Mr. Stoller was both a writer for one season and a guest star. I found fascinating the impact that show had on the rest of the business, as the actors on other shows the author worked on seem to always want to know what was happening with Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer.
A lot of fun, I highly recommend this great read.

The Feel Good Book of 2013
By William M. Courtney
I first saw Fred Stoller on HBO's 13th Annual Young Comedians Show. I was certain that Fred would soon have his own show or HBO Special. He is that lovable, neurotic, New York character we can't get enough of, yet Hollywood had other plans for Fred. His book is a tribute to the struggles of the life of a character actor. Fred gives us some great Hollywood insider stories, including his season as a writer at Seinfeld. He makes reference to some good and bad moments interacting with other celebrities. I found myself rooting for Fred throughout the book. There are plenty of laugh out loud moments inside as well. In one chapter, Fred shares his exercise of writing as many ideas as he can, in a speed round, for new Seinfeld scenarios. I won't spoil the book for you with the results, which may or may not include an episode with Jerry insulting Manute Bol. Buy the book, you will be pleasantly surprised!!!
