Wonderful Panorama

This book presents a picture of the Romanov family who ruled Russia for over 300 years. Although the book is a little over 200 pages, the author does a fantastic job of telling the story of each of these multi faceted individuals, with conscise insightful prose. I found the portraits that are presented interesting and informative. The cruelty, selfishness, good intentions, assassinations, rebellions, wars and half hearted attempts at reform are depicted with balance and context.
The author covers all of these colorful characters, some well known like Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Rasputin and Nicholas II, last of the Tsars. Other less well known individuals like Alexander I, and Anne are covered as well and these I found particularly interesting. Although much of the history is obscure and unfamiliar the author does an excellent job of shedding light on the characters and the historical perspective behind these strange, and unusual, figures. I especially enjoyed how the author explores how their family lives and secrets affected the entirety of Russia and its many citizens.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot! Excellent work!

Intriguing historical account of the Romanovs

I have always enjoyed history in school, college minor, and personal pursuits but I have never been exposed to the Romanov history as I was with this book. My knowledge of the Romanovs was limited to perhaps a mentioning of Peter the Great, Alexander I, and even Rasputin but never to the depth I was afforded while reading Ms. Crowles, “The Romanovs”.
For a book of only 217 pages I am amazed at the fact that over 300 years of Romanov history was presented. Beginning with the first Romanov and ending with the unfortunate demise of the entire family of Nicholas II. Of course, I believe the purpose was to offer the highlights of each reigning Tsar with careful thought of not overwhelming the reader with confusing points and information which the author performed admirably.
The Romanovs were a family of mixed characteristics…intelligence to simple, weakness or strength, madness, cruelty, extravagance to minimalism. It appeared that cruelty was by far a prevalent trait. The number of murders against their own family members was atrocious and brutal in form. Court secrets, rebellion and intrigue lead to fear and lack of trust of nearly everyone including family. Virginia Crowles explains how each of the Tsars impacted Russia, whether by advancement or decline. Perhaps the most impact, in my opinion, was offered by Peter the Great and Alexander I. I appreciated the fact that the women were not left out of Ms. Crowles presentation. Not only were there women who ruled Russia directly, but where strong in character who stood beside their husbands and had a huge impact on decisions. Another strong aspect that was raised by Virginia Crowles regarding the Romanov lifestyle was the numerous adulterous affairs by both husband and wife and the fact these affairs seemed to be endured and accepted without argument.
Virginia Crowles gives us a historical rendition of the Romanov family that is clearer understanding of these Russian rulers. Her resources and footnotes were precise and helpful with regard to a few of her points.
I received this eBook from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I truly recommend this historical account for any history buff. I was fascinated by all of the information Ms. Crowles provided. I especially recommend this read with the current DNA tests that are being done regarding the bodies suspected of being Nicholas II children. This would be great background to understanding the the importance of this situation.

Clear Overview

To judge "The Romanovs" by its format, it looks at first like a picture book with text. Interspersed with the full page illustrations, roughly thirty of them in color and taken in Russia by Victor Kennett, are a wide variety of smaller black and white pictures selected from archives. These are well chosen and above all well placed alongside the narrative, though curiously enough in the left-hand margins exclusively, never on the right.
Once one starts reading, though, it becomes clear that this book's main attraction is in fact the text, Virginia Cowles' concise history of the Romanov tsars. She has a gift for clearly summarizing events both confused and confusing. She has an eye for detail, while resisting the temptation to go into too much of it. It is not so easy to pull off an overview that spans more than three centuries and to select the essentials from such a broad mass of material in a way that retains the interest of the general reader. Above all, though she herself writes well, she knows when to select the telling quotation.
Describing Peter I's Great Embassy to Europe, the Austrian ambassador noted, "I have not seen such hard drinkers; it is not possible to express it, and they boast of it as a mighty qualification" (pg. 34). " 'The Russians as fashioned by Peter,' wrote Diderot mournfully, 'were rotten before they were ripe' " (pg. 61). "Elizabeth was not only uneducated and indolent, but firmly convinced that reading was injurious to the health" (pg. 72). "… What Catherine wanted was not reform but recognition of her intellectual conceptions, admiration for her liberalism" (pg. 93). "Although he [Alexander I] repealed the grotesque laws introduced by his father [Paul I], abolished the security police, and once again allowed his subjects to travel freely and to read foreign books, he seemed to be a man looking for a mission" (pg. 127); in due course, Napoleon was to supply that mission. "Nicholas I wasted no time turning his vast Empire into a barracks. To him sovereignty was merely an extension of army discipline" (pg. 160). It was during his reign – and under the influence of his Prussian wife Alexandra – that "German now replaced French as the language of the Imperial family," though "she could not impress Nicholas with the merits of Goethe or Schiller" (pg. 164). "True glory, to a Russian Emperor [such as Nicholas I], … meant an extension of territory" (pg. 176). Alexander III practiced "expansion abroad; repression at home" (pg. 234). When finally she comes to the outbreak of World War I, which would lead to the overthrow of the Romanov dynasty, she quotes Sidney Fay: "Russia's action made inevitable a European War" (pg. 267).
One drawback, typical of the time, is Cowles' total reliance on English-language sources. Another is that, as the quotations above make clear, she may be faulted for having an overly critical attitude towards her subject – the Romanovs, that is, not Russia herself.
