Selling a Message

I purchased this book to read in preparation for my CSET (California Subject Examination for Teachers) test in Social Science. It covers the standards required, but I find it lacking in many other respects. This book reads like a list of facts interjected with how cultural blending and how "such interaction has resulted in the mixing of different cultures in new and exciting ways".

Now let me preface my next statement by saying that cultural understanding, appreciation and tolerance are vital to a healthy country and people. I find world cultures fascinating, or I would not be in the field that I wish to teach in. But this book is so busy beating you over the head with the fact that you should like cultural blending (it says this phrase at least once a page for well over 1000 pages) that it sort of loses the series of events in a fog of social messages.

Cultural blending is something that happens all the time in this world, and often results out of conquest, migrations, trade, and pursuit of religious freedom - as the book points out. However, I feel they sometimes make stretches to drive their point home to the point of losing other themes of intolerance, domination and genocide (which is certainly not limited to WWII). It only gives passing mention to the butchering of people for their beliefs on a massive scale as Protestants and Catholics vied for power politically. It talks about the Shi'a Muslim Safavids and the Sunni Ottoman Turks butchering each other for their rivaling religious views but does not talk about how that may somehow have consequences in today's rift between the two groups. I'm not sure! This book is too busy telling me that the next ruler exported carpets and bought Chinese tiles and how that is cultural blending - not the consequences of 40,000 killed.

There are only shallow analyses in this book. The "consequences" or "legacies" that are so important are only addressed in the conclusions of a few units.

The chapters are organized in a thematic fashion, so it will jump continents and cultures every other unit from England to India to Africa. It also jumps around with the dates a lot as it is *not* chronological. I found it helpful when studying to make my own time lines to get a decent perspective on how things fit together.

In the second half the book, however it seems to take a completely different tone. Beginning with the Age of Exploration, the preachy quality of it dwindles and it focuses on what happened and why. Of course, European power struggles of the 1500-1700's don't really allow digression because of their convoluted nature!

So, did it serve my purpose? In some ways, yes. I will do well on my exam given that this material correlates with the standards on the test. However I would say this coverage is minimal, and if you are a high schooler reading this, this is NOT the book that will tell you whether you like history or not. This is strictly a list of facts to be regurgitated on a test with some values of tolerance sprinkled in.

Bought this for my son so that he would not have to lug all of the heavy books used in the classroom. He now has one to keep at home and the school copy stays at school. Totally worth the investment

A nice reference book

The book is very informative with some very interesting details. It's also well illustrated and easy to read, which is a quality most history books don't have. Definitely worth the price and good to have around especially if your kids like peeking into books.

Lovely Book! This was a perfect sequel to Twin Souls and I truly hope we will get to read a third book about Alex and Salem. There is a lot going on in this book aswell just like in Twin Souls but in this one I think it's more action. And I must say OMG to all of the crazy, sad and confusing things that Alex have to endure in this book. I would crumble instantly if I was her, gladly i'm not her lol. The only thing I do envy is her relaionship with Salem. He is so loving and understanding all of the time and Alex is everything to him. Alex relationship to her father Paul is kind of strained and weird at times, especially to the end of the story. Not to spoil anything but I really loved the turn Hybrid took towards the end of the book and it will be something to spin on in the third book (fingers crossed for that).

The story is so well written and you can really picture everything in your mind which I love!

Just as wonderful as the first, and I have a great intent to read them both again well I await the next. I found the book had a lot of unforeseen twist and turns that I found not only well thought out, but kept me anticipating the next page that much more. Amazing job K.A. Poe, you've written another amazing book!!

Beyond any fiction book out there

I have NEVER cried while reading a fictional story. EVER. This story made me cry a little. It wasnt becase it was especially sad it was just extremely powerful. The emotion that the author puts in the book is so raw and real... and...and magical that it will touch you deeply and have you doing what I did. When you read the last word you will roll off the couch and throw your Kindle while saying Holy Turd Holy Turd. Then you will start rolling across the living room carpet saying why why is it over and then you will come to the realization that THERES A THIRD BOOK!!!!!! You must read this book even if I think that it shouldnt be physically and morally possible to have so much action and awesomness in one single book.

Stewart's Homage to the Hebrides

Gianetta Brook has had a rough go of it. Lovely, red-haired and seemingly a London jet-setter, she is actually a vulnerable young woman with a sterling set of ethics and lingering loyalties. Her romantic history, however, is disappointing. As a younger model, awash with the glow of new-found fame, she meets writer Nicholas Drury, 10 years her senior. Sardonic and handsome, he sweeps her away in a whirlwind courtship that ends in a swift marriage doomed to fail as she believes he only sees her slick model's veneer and not the innocent girl beneath the gloss. Four years later, Gianetta finds herself divorced, still modeling and utterly exhausted by her seemingly sophisticated life. A vacation to the isle of Skye in the Hebrides is recommended by her well-meaning parents. Especially as she wants to avoid the coronation throngs crowding London in May of 1953, Gianetta quickly accepts their advise. Within days she finds herself at the small Camas Fhionnaridh Hotel at the foot of the Cuillin where fishing and climbing is the order of the day and the fast pace of London is left far behind her. Or so she thinks. Instead of peace and quiet, she is first assaulted by the advent of her ex-husband, then by the fact that all of the company staying in the hotel are actually suspected of being a killer who has murdered a local girl in a bizarre ritualistic way involving the Old Religion's tradition of setting wildfire in honor of the Beltane. In the styple of a classic Agatha Christie drawing room police procedural, Gianetta's values are put to the test as the local police enlist her aid in creating their dragnet and the clues begin to point unerringly towards identifying Nicholas as the unknown murderer.
Ever present in this well-written story is Mary Stewart's evident love of nature and her uncanny ability to impose on the reader's mind's eye the majesty of the Scottish Hebrides--the towering mountains, the misty bogs and the glittering lochs. Her expert juxtaposition of the modern day coronation ceremony with the Highland lore of old is scintillating in that it evokes an intelligent Hitchcockian anticipation and delightfully squeamish dread of what is to come as one turns to the next page. Most of the romance takes place outside the bounds of the novel; the reader must conjur up his/her own imagery of the couples relationship before and after the actual storyline. For those who liked Du Maurier's Jamaica Inn, I think Wildfire at Midnight will equally enthrall.

Creepy Hebridean Murder Mystery

When I was a child in the 1970s we were on a holiday on the west coast of Scotland and by chance, taking refuge in the car from the torrential summer downpour in the barren square of Portree, my father turned on the radio. What came on was a creepy, disturbing drama set on Skye. A young woman, the only visitor to this country hotel not on the suspect list for a grizzly murder is sitting in the dead of night by the unconscious body of another would-be victim of the murderer. "How appropriate!" my mother laughed, and we listened on. The landscape of the story was the same landscape that was around me, though I couldn't see it for the rain, and there were strange characters, a crazed climber, beltane fires and murder. I thought it was great and it really, really stayed with me. It was years later that I read Wildfire at Midnight and realised that this was the self-same story I'd heard as a child. It's cracking, unashamedly romantic, but really rather well written. A good read for a sick day tucked up on the sofa, or a quiet night in. Mary Stewart's great - if only new pulp fiction could manage the same alluring balance of literary poise and good swash-buckling plots. No one else does it as well.

My Favourite Stewart novel!!

This is my favourite Mary Stewart Novel. Gianetta is getting away from a bad marriage. He thought her the perfect, mature spouse, instead she was a young, insecure woman in love and he betrays her. Getting away from it all, she takes a vacation to the Isle of Skye, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. There she finds a mix of fellow guests, but her peaceful vacation meant to repair her soul is shattered when her ex husband arrives.
It is as moody and atmospheric as the Isle itself, and grows darker as they soon discover there is a madman aloose in the group, killing people in ancient pagan fashion. As they near the Pagan Holiday of Beltaine (May Day) where bonfires were lit high in the hills, she fears that madman may be her exhusand.
A super timeless read that you will never forget.

A Great Book on Understanding Telekinesis

Telekinesis is a great read and the second book in the Psychic Awakening series by Embrosewyn Tazkuvel. The author is a gifted storyteller and his personal experiences and journey are captivating and give some nice insight into focusing. Telekinesis has a dubious history and there is a lot of distortion and misunderstanding. Not to mention all the science fiction books and movies that can distort everything behind it. Here the author steps back and delves into the history of telekinesis and the more modern day term, psychokinesis. I really like how he breaks all of this down, very helpful for anyone that wants a better look and understanding to all that’s behind this mysterious phenomenon and ability. I can understand and agree that a person’s auric field is what is at the heart of any manifesting. Now, one of the best parts of the book, is how much time is spent on the different exercises and experiments that are here to help you practice and expand your abilities.

Very informative book on Telekinesis

I am always interested in Telekinesis for a while and I am impressed with what I read in this book. Only someone like the author who has extensive experience in Telekinesis can give practical and realstic advice. This book is easy to read as the author managed to organise them in a logical manner.

The author uses simple and very readable language to explain the concepts and exercises. I just started on the basic Telekinesis exercise and will work on the more advanced exercises soon. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Telekinesis

An interesting read!

This author does an excellent job of describing events that have happened to him and others pertaining to telekinesis. He also gives an outstanding explanation of what it actually is and how it works. I believe that anyone that is interested in harnessing this ability should take the time to read this fantastic book and learn from someone who has actually had these experiences himself. Thank you Mr. Tazkuvel I found it very informative.

Excelent Book

This is an excelent book that covers very well "the old and new" Growth Theory". However it is a very hard book and be prepared to use everything you know about math and economics. Perfect book for graduation courses in growth theory. My only suggestion is to include a chapter about the efect of institutions on the economies.

"Economic Growth" by Robert Barro and Xavier Sala-I-Martin is one of the best book about economic growth theory who I've seen. This book together with "Advanced Macroeconomics" by David Romer and "Endogenous Growth Theory" by Philippe Aghion and Peter W. Howitt are the principal books about all the modern economic growth theory. I recommend very much this book. PD. I bought the last book, sorry.

If you're a Karachiite you'll love it!

Just finished this novel.

LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT!

Saba has presented Karachi like it really is. Everything like the bumpy roads, coffee at espresso, stealing wifi, needing a ups, rickshaw walas manoeuvring trough lanes that don't even show up on google maps, the blast, the protests, the bootleggers, everything!

Such a keen sense of observation. I felt I was almost there.

Things have changed for the better in the past few years (no more "payya jams"!) but still.

I had goosebumps in the end. And when she finally hugged Saad, my eyes were moist.

I was so engrossed in her world. I could feel her pain and finally her joy.

I did feel sad though. Why did one of the most platonic relationships need to be turned into a regular one.

Also recalled the famous bollywood dialogue "kya aik larka aur larki dost nahee ho saktay"?

Anywho..

Lovely story!

Can't wait to read her next one.

Great summer read!

Great way to get a feel for life in Karachi, as well as the life of a reporter, through the viewpoint of a female reporter (and oh by the way the author, Saba Imtiaz, is a female journalist living in Karachi). Funny and insightful, a great read. The only complaint is that she occasionally uses a phrase or sentence in Urdu (I think); you still kind of get the idea, but I would have liked a translation somewhere! Otherwise, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Saba Imtiaz has taken good care in keeping the narrative true to life in Karachi. The subtleties of her interactions with policemen, rickshaw drivers, guards etc leave a refreshing impression about a city where life moves at a very fast pace. Readers would find this book interesting in 50 years time as well, when it will have a historic element to life in karachi.

Insightful study of heroic quests in cinema

You’ll be surprised by how many celebrated films are driven by a hero or heroine’s quest to overcome daunting obstacles and fulfill their destinies as complete individuals. Maria Garcia finds intriguing and unexpected connections between a wildly diverse group of films, ranging in genre from screwball comedy to westerns, from fairy tales to thrillers, even baseball movies! Her chapter on The Silence of the Lambs brilliantly uncovers and dissects the myriad symbols and motifs in that popular suspense film and will have you eager to watch it again for its carefully layered subtext. In all, this is an insightful, fresh examination of centuries-old archetypes and the crucial role they play in so much of our movie entertainment.

Good writing, solid research.

“Cinematic Quests for Identity” is a scholarly book (it has footnotes and a bibliography), but it is written in the style of long-form journalism, of the kind you read in The New Yorker. I think students and professors of film and literature will want to read it. The author’s expertise is in film, but she spends a lot of time talking about how the conventions of quest films are based on epic poems such as Chrétien de Troyes’s “Perceval,” and on Greek mythology. I like that Garcia writes about the female quest as different from the male quest and the child’s quest. Also, she is a feminist writer, so when she discusses Greek myths, or Darwinian theory, she has a completely different take on these stories. I just wish it were in Italian!

Good reading.

I'm a good bit older than the suggested age range for this "juvenile reading" book. However, it's as much of a page-turner as Grisham's adult thrillers. Young Mr. Boone, middle school son of two lawyers, uses his smarts and legal knowledge to investigate a disappearance, the victim of which is a good friend. With help from his friends, and his black-sheep uncle, will Theo find the missing friend? It took only a few hours for me to find out, ripping through each page with great reading pleasure.

Page turner!

Theodore Boone is back again, and in John Grisham's newest mystery, Theo's friend, April, has vanished! The only problem is that no one has a clue what happened. Theo, her best friend, decides to do his own secret investigations with his closest friends and his ex-lawyer uncle Ike. Even working together on search efforts, they are getting nowhere fast, and everyone starts to wonder, "How long until we see her on the news dead or injured?"

This book is very well done. It is a page-turner that is almost impossible to put down. I recommend this to a younger audience, but even adults will like it!

A Solid Offering from Grisham for Kids!

In terms of reviewing this book, it is important to think of it from the standpoint of a 11-15 reading the book and not an adult as the young adult is really Grisham's primary target audience. With that in mind, in this story Grisham reintroduces us to Theodore Boone--a young man with a penchant for detective work and a budding 13-yr old "attorney." Both of his parents are lawyers and as a result he has a unique opportunity to combine his entrepreneurial skills with the ability to learn at his parents feet. In this the second Theodore Boone story by Grisham, he is immediately thrown into the fray when his best friend April goes missing. He doesn't necessarily believe at first that she was in fact taken by someone else but after days of her continuing to go missing as well as the appearance of an old family relative back from jail, he fears the worst. The story continues with his somewhat odd uncle Ike once again coming on the scene to help out and eventually play a big role in the resolution of this mystery.

From the standpoint of recommending it to children, I thought the subject matter was appropriate for agest 13-and up. The subject matter of kidnapping might be a bit tough for kids younger than that to take and sometimes the descriptions got fairly graphic. The story also touches on divorce which is a subject that needs to be handled carefully around young children. I was slightly dissapointed with how Grisham chose to end the book. It felt very abrupt and I thought he could have done a bit of a better job goign slightly deeper into the relationship between Theodore and his parents and even Theodore and April. Overall however a strong book and one that will likely do well especially with teens.
