Ayesha is a twenty-something reporter in one of the world's most dangerous cities. Her assignments range from showing up at bomb sites and picking her way through scattered body parts to interviewing her boss's niece, the couture-cupcake designer. In between dicing with death and absurdity, Ayesha despairs over the likelihood of ever meeting a nice guy, someone like her old friend Saad, whose shoulder she cries on after every romantic misadventure. Her choices seem limited to narcissistic, adrenaline-chasing reporters who'll do anything to get their next story, to the spoilt offspring of the Karachi elite who'll do anything to cure their boredom. Her most pressing problem, however, is how to straighten her hair during the chronic power outages. Karachi, You're Killing Me! is Bridget Jones's Diary meets the Diary of a Social Butterfly, a comedy of manners in a city with none.

Review
"In a world that often views Pakistani women one-dimensionally, Imtiaz shows the complexity of women trying to forge careers, find love and be a good friend." - Associated Press
"Refreshingly devoid of glosses and translations, Imtiaz's novel is unapologetically faithful to the cultural nuances from which it emerges." - Mint
"The novel is by no means a sensationalized account of the contemporary life of women like us; our heroine is remarkably unglamorous, as is her life. The reader who finds this salacious is simply out of touch with contemporary Pakistan." - Pique

If you're a Karachiite you'll love it!
By Muhammad Shariq
Just finished this novel.
LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT!
Saba has presented Karachi like it really is. Everything like the bumpy roads, coffee at espresso, stealing wifi, needing a ups, rickshaw walas manoeuvring trough lanes that don't even show up on google maps, the blast, the protests, the bootleggers, everything!
Such a keen sense of observation. I felt I was almost there.
Things have changed for the better in the past few years (no more "payya jams"!) but still.
I had goosebumps in the end. And when she finally hugged Saad, my eyes were moist.
I was so engrossed in her world. I could feel her pain and finally her joy.
I did feel sad though. Why did one of the most platonic relationships need to be turned into a regular one.
Also recalled the famous bollywood dialogue "kya aik larka aur larki dost nahee ho saktay"?
Anywho..
Lovely story!
Can't wait to read her next one.

Great summer read!
By Susan
Great way to get a feel for life in Karachi, as well as the life of a reporter, through the viewpoint of a female reporter (and oh by the way the author, Saba Imtiaz, is a female journalist living in Karachi). Funny and insightful, a great read. The only complaint is that she occasionally uses a phrase or sentence in Urdu (I think); you still kind of get the idea, but I would have liked a translation somewhere! Otherwise, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Refreshing
By Amazon Customer
Saba Imtiaz has taken good care in keeping the narrative true to life in Karachi. The subtleties of her interactions with policemen, rickshaw drivers, guards etc leave a refreshing impression about a city where life moves at a very fast pace. Readers would find this book interesting in 50 years time as well, when it will have a historic element to life in karachi.
