Review
When I started reading this book, I found myself amazed that the author seemed to understand North Korean society even better than me and I used to live there! I was sucked into the story, and it felt less like reading a novel and more like reliving my childhood and escape from North Korea. Around 25,000 North Koreans have defected to the South as of 2013, and it seemed like the heartbreaking tale of each defector was distilled into this story. --Kim Young-il, president of PSCORE

Yeong-dae's story blends reportage and children's fiction, giving readers a fresh understanding of life in North Korea and the history of North and South Korea. The well-crafted plot and the breathless narrative flow will engage young readers, too. --School Library Journal, Korea

Reading ACROSS THE TUMEN, you can imagine the tragic lives faced by those who had the misfortune of being born in North Korea . . . As you follow Yeong-dae through this book, you will find yourself thinking long and hard about the food, clothing, and shelter that we take for granted . . . Moon is one of those rare writers who deal with such weighty topics. --yunizini, Kyobo Books reviewer

Brilliant account
By rina so
This novel says it's a fictional account, but it actually reflects a situation that happens much too frequently in North Korea today and I might go as far as to say this is could very well be a non-fictional account of some young North Korean child as we speak. Moon depicts the story of a young boy, not even past puberty, who has to face harrowing situations in order to live a life that many of us in other parts of the world take for granted because we were born into much more privileged and comfortable lives. This book gives a peek in fine detail about what exactly people in this mysterious and closed country have to do when they defect, and what they have to suffer simply to escape poverty, starvation, and harassment. I hope that many can read this novel with an open mind and truly absorb the account for what it is in order to appreciate our current fortunes and to help these people who are powerless under the current system. It is a page-turner for me because of how real the plot is and the writer seems to have extensively researched what really goes on in the Hermit Kingdom.

Easy and informative read
By Samuel Robertson
Incredible story – the other reviews were right when they said you can't put it down until you've finished it! I've learned a lot about North Korea in my studies, and it's clear the author did her research on the topic. This book does a great job of informing the reader of the horrible conditions within North Korea and the challenges its people face while remaining an enjoyable and easy read. (I finished it in about two days – the pages just fly by!) I think this book would be perfect to use to teach middle / high school students about the country today. Overall, a perfect book for a young adult interested in the region!

Great Book, A Must Read
By Sandra K. Stiles
Across the Tumen is one of those stories you start reading and can't put it down until you finish it. This is a fictionalized account of one North Korean boy's escape across the Tumen River into China. Although this is a fictional account the author has made it clear that this continues on today. Most of my students here in America have no idea how wonderful their life is. They have no idea how the children of other countries suffer. Through Yeong-dae's story we watch a family torn apart by starvation. We see the depths members will go to for each other and the price it will cost them. Most importantly we see what lengths someone is will to go to, the dangers they are willing to accept when they realize their country has lied to them. If you are a teacher wanting to get across the point of propaganda and its effect on a people, then this is definitely the book to read. This book will make you sick to your stomach, make you cringe, definitely make you cry both tears of sadness and joy. But most importantly this book will make you feel lucky you live in America. It will make you wonder what you can do for others out there. After all, isn't that what a great book does? It makes you feel. I definitely recommend this book to everyone young and old.
