About the Author

Dr Alan Barclay is a consultant dietitian and chief scientific officer at the Glycemic Index Foundation. He was Head of Research at the Australian Diabetes Council (Diabetes NSW) from 1998-2014 and is a member of the editorial boards of Diabetes Australia's consumer magazine, Conquest, and health professional magazine, Diabetes Management Journal. Very Entertaining Series; Hope We See More of Maddy and His World

I read three books by Nick Pirog, prior to reading "Borns", the second in the Maddy Young series. Two were contemporary mystery/suspense books featuring the protagonist, Thomas Prescott. The third book was the first book in the Maddy Young series. I liked all three books and looked forward to reading more in both series. Unfortunately, there were no new books available at that time. That has since been remedied and there are now new books available in both series.

The Maddy Young books are set in a place that is obviously not present-day Earth. The first book leaves the reader in some doubt as to exactly where the protagonist, Maddy Young, has landed. Maddy died, or did he? If he did die, then where is he? Is he in limbo, purgatory, some celestial waiting area, an alternate earth, or in a future earth? Why is he there? How did he get there?

Maddy and the reader know there is something suspicious going on, and we know the society in which Maddy finds himself, is not what it appears to be on the surface. In the first book, the author builds a new world, introduces important characters, and provides the foundation for future books in the series. The book does have a conclusion, but it is not the end of the story.

"Borns" picks up where book one left off. Maddy begins to find answers and he begins to understand that he has become an unwilling participant in a longstanding war between Borns and normal humans. He is forced to choose sides and he discovers more about what is happening. The immediate story line in this book is resolved, but the stage is set for what comes next for Maddy and his friends in future books.

Maddy is an interesting character. He is irreverent, iconoclastic, resistant to authority, sometimes sarcastic, pragmatic, whimsical, funny and committed to the underdog and to what he sees as an honourable path. Other characters are well-drawn and the story moves along at a good pace. So far, I am enjoying the series and am looking forward to reading more about Maddy and his world.

There are a few things that might be an issue for some readers. There were minor problems with grammar, and spell check allowed the wrong words to be used a few times, because the spelling was correct. I noticed this, but it didn't affect my enjoyment of the book. There was also mild profanity and allusions to sex. I felt it was used judiciously and fit into the dialogue, story line and the characters' personalities; it was not gratuitous or excessive. The only reason I mentioned the grammar, language and sexual references is because I know some reviewers give low ratings for books with that content, when they were expecting a perfectly clean read. So I would not recommend this book to anyone who has an exceptionally low to no tolerance for the above-mentioned content.

On the other hand, if you are the type of reader who likes a well-written, entertaining story to while away an afternoon, if you like a slightly irreverent, very likeable hero, a cast of interesting characters, and a Saturday afternoon matinee movie plot, then I recommend this book. On the surface, it is a fun read, it has some serious undertones, it is a bit over-the-top in places, and it would play out nicely as a movie.

Who knows why something appeals to some people and not others? Nick Pirog's writing appeals to me, though, so I hope he continues to entertain us with his writing.

Wonderful, but needs one more edit.

First off, for BookBub finds, Borns and Arrival (which really can't be read separately) were pretty fantastic. Straight-up good storytelling. The missing star is because the manuscript needs one more polish draft. My reading pace was slowed by missing commas, a few minor issues of sentence structure, and one glaring paragraph that was eaten in the editing process (in which a brand name was clearly changed from a 'real' brand to a 'two' brand, but unfortunately no one changed the 'an' to 'a' in that sentence. Then the brand name is flubbed later in the paragraph.

Really good story. Enjoyable read.
Please hire secondary copy-editor in the future.

Borns Review

When I discovered the first book in this series, I was excited as I have really enjoyed Nick Pirog's books. And when I saw that he had a second book in the series I couldn't wait to read it! I reread the first book as it had been awhile since i'd read it and wanted to refresh my memory. And I really was intrigued by the story line, even after a second reading. But what a disappointment Borns is! It starts out recapping the first book word for word for nearly half the book, and barely moves moves the story forward.

A Flawless Biography of a Unique American

What can you say about a shy, slender, half-blind woman, about five feet in height, who slept on the open prairie, lived with Indians on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Reservation, interviewed the likes of Black Elk, He Dog, Short Bull, Red Feather and others who personally knew Crazy Horse, who had already struggled for years as a writer before penning the ultimate biography of America's first authentic hero? From page one of "Crazy Horse: The Strange Man of the Oglalas" there is a sense that something spectacular is being recorded for posterity, never again to be witnessed by a living being. We are fortunate that Mari Sandoz lived during a time when the legend of Crazy Horse was still able to be told by those who knew and lived with him, but even more fortunate is that this amazing biography was written by an artist of the highest order. The story of the great Lakota warrior who refused to let his heritage be destroyed by the white man, will make you weep and wish you could have ridden with him on that open prairie.

Crazy Horse: The Strange Man of the Oglalas

In his foreword to the 50th anniversary edition, Stephen Oates, himself an historian and biographer of note, describes how Sandoz came to write the life of Crazy Horse and states,"Mari Sandoz and Crazy Horse may be the most potent pairing of author and subject in the history of modern biography." He praises Sandoz for writing "with a creative and lyrical brilliance that makes Crazy Horse a tour de force of language and style" and calls the book "...an almost perfect work of biographical art." I could not agree more with Oates. I have read the entire book two times and portions of it many more times.
Readers are often faced with the dilemma of deciding to read further after the first few chapters of a book in the hope they'll "get into it" or to close it and turn it into a dust-catcher. Not so with Sandoz's Crazy Horse. The reader is immediately drawn into it. I was hooked by the lyricism of the first few words of the book which told me that this was going to be no ordinary biography. They read as follows: "The drowsy heat of middle August lay heavy as a furred robe on the upper country of the Shell River, the North Platte of the white man. Almost every noon the thunders built themselves a dark cloud to ride the far crown of Laramie Peak. But down along the river no rain came to lay the dust of the emigrant road, and no cloud shaded the gleaming 'dobe walls and bastions of Fort Laramie, the soldier town that was only a little island of whites in a great sea of Indian country two thousand miles wide."
This story is told, not in the voice of a distant historian, but in the voice of an eyewitness. The vividness of her narrative would convince you, if you did not know otherwise, that Sandoz walked with Crazy Horse and his people. But even though she did not walk with them, she knew them well.
This is an extraordinary work of creative nonfiction that makes you love being a reader.

A Novel or Biography?

The strange man of the Lakotas made very little contact with the "white man" and remains a mysterious character of native American culture. Not much is known about him, his birth, his death, his burial.

Sandoz attempts to document as much history is known about this man, and she puts it in the form of a novel. It is easy to read and entertaining. Yet it includes historical facts, events and characters. While it is difficult to pen a biography about someone who so little is known about, Sandoz documents all that is known about him in this book. Many of the facts were taken from interviews with people who knew him and lived with him. Those people are all long gone. The only comprehensive memory of Crazy Horse is this book.

Flawed, but still the best Ultimate Iron Man series to date

After a pair of sub-par Ultimate Iron Man series, the armored Avenger is getting another solo shot in Ultimate Iron Man: Armor Wars by Warren Ellis and Steve Kurth. As the title suggests, this storyline revisits the classic Iron Man: Armor Wars concept in which Tony Stark's Iron Man technology is stolen and sold on the black market to various costumed thugs. In this case it is occurring in the post-Ultimatum universe where Tony Stark's company is falling apart and he's still reeling from the events of Ultimatum.

Warren Ellis is one of my absolute favorite writers, and his Iron Man: Extremis story is one of my favorite Iron Man sagas, so obviously I had high hopes for this tale. For the most part, Ellis doesn't disappoint. He understands the character much better than Card ever did, and his Tony Stark is the same Tony Stark we came to love from Mark Millar's The Ultimates Omnibus series. The story is fast-paced and the dialogue is priceless. I love the new Ghost and some of the other armored villains, and Justine Hammer was a great addition. Unfortunately the series took a sharp turn with issue four that seemed a little too ridiculous - especially the ending. It seemed cheap, and was definitely a buzzkill.

Apparently this was Steve Kurth's first superhero gig, but you'd never know it looking at these pages. I'm a bit spoiled by Salvador Larrocca's work on the regular Iron Man series, but Kurth did a great job here, both on the armored battle scenes and the more mundane scenes. It helps that the inking and coloring are also high-quality.

Ultimate Iron Man: Armor Wars isn't perfect, but it is a marked improvement over the previous Ultimate Iron Man series and a good way to reaffirm Iron Man's status as a major player in the Ultimate Marvel Universe. I'd recommend it to Ultimates fans as well as casual Iron Man fans looking for something new.

Not bad, but maybe too short

The Ultimate Armor Wars is funny. You can see Stark's problems after ultimatum, and the fall of his technology in wrong hands.
It's a somewhat condensed and Ultimized version of the original universe Armor War(which i reccomend, it's a very good read).
The problem with this book it's not the story, it's not the action, it's not the art... the problem it's too short. At only four issues, you are able to read this really fast. Perhaps a more extended plot and two more issues could have been done. The story could have been used for that easily.
In the end, not a bad reading, but i rode it really fast. It's agile and entertaining.

I loved this series from start to finish all of the Ultimate Iron Man minis have been good so far but this one is the better of Ellis's to, picks up a little bit after Ultimatum and has Tony trying to get all his tech back. Only complaint is that it should have been longer, needed maybe a issue or two more then this would have been perfect, towards the end it just starts feeling rushed
